Well the picture sucks ( I think you can click on the pic and make it bigger) but it says anchorage for explosives. Has anyone else seen anything like that.

That is probably the only place you will see it because the Military Ocean Terminal at Sunny Point is the only military ammo port in the country. That notation you are seeing is an anchorage for ships heading up river. If you head north another 6 miles or so and swing up the Cape Fear River towards Wilmington, you will see it on the left just past the ADM dock at Southport. You can tell it by the battleship gray cranes and the gray gunboat(s) docked there. There are ample warning signs and buoys that tell you where not to go. Heed the warnings, I can assure you from experience those boys are very serious. I lived in the area for ten years, and during the first Gulf War the place was gangbusters-- they were loading ordinance day and night for transport to the gulf where they anchored offshore for use as needed. The locals didnt know how to act-- they were payin 35 bucks/hr for forklift drivers. The military closed all public facilities in a 15 mile radius of the place for the duration of the war, armed soldiers 24/7 at all rail crossings heading into the place, gray vehicles with black windows and no markings everywhere. Living there, every now and then you can hear tremendous explosions from way offshore- kinda like thunder only it's a clear day. They say they aint asplodin extra/obsolete stuff, but it didnt sound like swamp gas to me, and I tend to be skeptical of govt spokesmen anyway.
