Just got back from Van Hallen concert!

Re: Just got back from Van Hallen concert!
David Lee Roth just performed at the Hatshell here in Boston for the 4th July festivities. Heard him (too many people to get close) sing......ehhh, he's loosing that great voice he had in the 80's. Not much of a stage appearance, and I'm sure its not age becuase when Zep came through Boston 5 years ago, Plant's voice was dead on on all the old stuff and Page's fingers were cranking.

Van Halen was great before Dave went completely over the edge.
Sammy couldn't have done the early Van Halen stuff... listen to it in your mind... it needed Dave.
But Dave couldn't have gone to the place that Van Hagar eventually did. Cherone was like that girl that you thought was cute when you were drunk, but then when it wore off...
Sammy will still be rocking after the VH brothers give it up, I'll bet. He's like the freaking Energizer Bunny.

David Lee Roth is now an EMT in the Bronx. He was a surgical orderly for the past few years and just passed his EMT exam. How would you like to have that face working away on you after an accident? ...Apparently he comes from a family of Doctors and they were not to happy with him being a rock star instead

Re: Just got back from Van Hallen concert!
Dave's dad was a wealthy dentist in Southern California and financed the whole Van Halen thing. The rumor has always been that was the only way that Eddie and Alex could put up with him but also the only way they could afford to be the band they were. I was told from friends that grew up in the back yards where Van Halen played that Dave to voice lessons constantly to be able to sing. Maybe he needs to take lessons again.

That is EXACTLY right. I've seen Van Halen/Van Hagar six times, three with each singer. And they both did THEIR songs in a manner that the other could not.
Roth rocks on the debut "Van Halen" album.
On "OU812" Sammy is just tremendous.
I think that Van Halen "grew" as a band when Sammy joined. Their music just seemed to get more, I hate to use this word but can't think of any other, sophisticated or complex, or something. Kind of like the earlier Aerosmith and the later Aerosmith.
I'm heading up to Largo next month to see the "all original member" Vanilla Fudge. Remember those guys? Then that evolved into "Cactus", then Beck, Bogart, and Appiece (spelling?).
Unfortunately I think Eddie's health issues have somewhat caught up with him. But those boys can rock. I don't believe there is much question that Eddie is considered the premiere "rock" guitarist. Supporting cast isn't too bad either.

I like watching VH1 when they rank the top rock guitarists of all time. Although I disagree w/ some of their rankings. I'm quite sure this will raise a whole new and worthy debate, but Angus can outplay Eddie anyday IMO.

My vote is for Hagar. I liked VH better after Roth left. The drummer is a fellow boater and has a condo in Havasu. He usually rolls out with a big crew when he is there.
