:D OK, I have a 42 Sonic with trip 500's now. I want to go faster without loosing ride quality. I boat in the great lakes, so I'm told steps will do nothing for me due to the fact that that the waves are closer together. If a 12" box is good does that mean a 24" box is better providing the X is correct? Or are notches the reason the ITS is only set back 6"? BTW Wicked Won, I already know you are going to tell me I don't need any freakin' steps. :D

how does a notch affect the lifting strakes if you are in effect making the lifting strakes a foot or so longer?

If your running in Erie like me I think anthing over 40ft has to ride pretty well. It's little boats like mine that get the hell beat out of them. Last 4th of july weekend 4-5'a between kelly's and PIB about 10ft apart. They rattled the piss out of my resin bucket.


What speeds and size of boat are you looking for? Bigger more power? or Just faster?

madcow...whoever told you line of BS...anyway the thing i would be concerened about loosing freeboard and overall space...a 42 sonic rocks for several reasons....i guess you could be looking at the black thunders and 45 donzi's...you will be pleased with either with 3x525's.

I can tell you from my experience with the 311 Formula and the 382 Formula. The 382 is stepped and notched with extension boxes, but 3000# heavier. Same motors and same props, the 382 is 5 M.P.H. faster! Given the extra length and weight of the 382, it will also walk through some rough stuff that I had to back off in with the 311.

I haven't noticed any significant handling issues, but I have been very conservative with it. I think Formula is very conservative with their step design. I have not heard of any spins or rolls in a 382 other than under race conditions.

I think Formula would have a big hit with a stepped 419 with big twins/#6 drives, but they're not making it anymore :(

Have you checked out the Formula 40 SS yet? Some nice used ones coming on the market at decent prices. 58 m.p.h. with factory power (??? with my Sterlings stuffed in).:D Hey ... I would even take one for the team and drive it for you while you're down below making the next pitcher of 'ritas :)
