Re: Herring Props.....
Hey Rich,
I had some real interesting results with the P5X's on the Gladiator. We didnt lose any top end but we shaved a ton of time off of our 65 to 80 mph times. I was running a pretty high X dimension at the time but I think the results are indicative of the performance of the props. If you have questions drop me a note. These were also the first set of props and they were not labbed. Brett |

Re: Herring Props.....
What is the difference between the P-5x and the P-5? They are advertised on Throttle ups site for the same price....999.00

Re: Herring Props.....
Ive had 2 sets on Radio Active, and both times blades blew off. If you guys all remember the last set which was new I had that engraving (flames) put on them at our shop, I posted the pic of them on here. The blade blew off in the Tic Faw PR last year its been over 15 mos and numerous phone calls, but I can't get any satisfaction. A terrible way to run a business, especially after Jim admitted he had problems with one of his suppliers overseas. So to answer your question, I never put more than 4 hours on the set of them...they suck. Jeff Jassby

Re: Herring Props.....
Thanx.....I didnt have a real good opinion of them to begin with.....I guess you get what you pay for......

Re: Herring Props.....
Hey Rich
Go with the 6 blade hering props. Yes they are pricey but the best for the set up you are running. 30 x 15.5 6 blades. As for service & getting them on the phone I have not had any problem working with them. Rick OSG |
Re: Herring Props.....
I've used Hering 5-blade cleavers. As far as quality goes, they are top-notch no question about it. Up there with Rolla. My experience is that Herings are a bit less durable than Rollas but are also a bit faster. The craftsmanship is I think equal, it's just the durability/speed compromise that is a tad different. The trouble is, they cost an arm and a leg and then some. Even Rollas are cheap compared to Herings...
But if you've got the dough and want to go all out, way to go IMHO... |
Re: Herring Props.....
The Hering props are a fine piece of craftmanship, no doubt about it. As with any boat and set-up the Herings are not always the best prop on a paticular boat. Especially boats that require some bow lift. The Herings have the same rake angle as the Hydromotive Quad IV and P5. Thus it tends to lift the stern. The more blades the greater the stern lift.
We have done a lot of testing with the P5X. This is a bow lidting prop with a rake angle similar to that of a Bravo 1. Out of the box, stock, it is the best running 5 blade we have found yet, I consider Hering props as lab finished. When stock it has a 1 year warranty. If you have any questions or would like to try a pair, we have some test props, give us a call. |
Re: Herring Props.....
Ermmm, Jeff you know I know you're a knowledgeable guy and all that but two things:
1. In my experience, blades flying off usually has nothing to do with the prop itself (unless it's a Mercury prop which are thin and light but at least they're cheap and fast). Usually there is a problem elsewhere, causing vibrations (not necessarily perceived by the driver) and moments of force outside of prop design parameters. 2. Why did you have anything engraved on an expensive set of props? If this process does not fragilize what is a fragile piece of equipment, then even the slightest uneveness on the surface is enough to cause unexpected stress on the blades, stress which was unaccounted for during the design and manufacturing process. This is why even the slightest ding in the blades should be repaired immediately otherwise prolonged use may cause further and unrepairable damage. Props may feel all heavy and look tough but are actually fragile things designed for only one purpose. They are not meant to bounce around in the back of trucks, have any sort of engraving done on them... |
Re: Herring Props.....
What about the merc Maximus five blades, I have had some 30's labbed and traded them in on 28's labbed (by Merc) and have only received one so far but these things are gnarly the sure seem to hook up well with what ever x you are running the higher the better and they still hook.

The 6 Blades didn't work for me. The boat picked up alot of midrange, and shot out of the hole like a rocket. I lost 6 mph on the top end and could only turn 4900 rpm's though. Personally, I am more interested in the top end on my boat. I was depressed that they didn't work because they are a sweet addition to have, but oh well. :( |
Re: Herring Props.....
we used 6 blades only for patrol boats which carry about 7000 lbs. of equipment. top end not as important as acceleration and ability to carry that load at cruising speed. with four engines and four drives, the maximum speed was achieved with 5 blades inside and 4 blades outside. 4 blades on all four drives produced too much vibration, especially with full tanks (700 gallons).

Re: Herring Props.....
Has anyone ever tried a Hering 4 blade on a single 27-30 footer ??

Hey Rich Bret (out of control) is a new lip ship gladiator with the same set up as yours & is seeing top speed 91+ with 1/2 fuel and 4 people. He is running hering 6 blades 30 x 15.5 Rich you know how my boat runs Rick OSG |
Re: Herring Props.....
I think for the Gladiator ,6 bladed Herrings are the only proven props that work. The new 5 bladed 32 lab Merc. prop would probably work, but who knows?
|
Re: Herring Props.....
I ran 5 blade labbed 31's on our Cig w/ 575's. Props hooked up real nice , however we did sling a blade off. They're sharp too - bring bandaids and your wallet! BH

Hey Paul Did you order yours props yet? Rick OSG |
Re: Herring Props.....
I, too, have been inquiring about props. Granted, a cat is a different animal (pardon the pun), but:
CPR at LOTO put a set of Herrings on an Eliminator 30 Daytona (replacing Bravo 1's), and picked up nearly TEN MPH on the top end, as well as a significant gain in planing. The X was high on this boat, and it probably didn't have the correct pitch Bravo's but DAMN, that a bunch of increase. From the guys at CPR, they have used several sets of herrings, and when ordering them were told exactly what performance gains to expect. So far, the gains were just as they were told, if not slightly better. I am looking to try a set of P-5X's and also some Hydro 6 blades. Julie told me someone else tried them on a DCB and was VERY happy with the new 6 blades. We'll see. |

Super T. These are the props. And these are the second props, the first ones weren't even mine, they were borrowered from Stan Gordon's 37 OuterLimits boat, which had only 8 hours on them. Pat at A.T. put them on for me when he delivered the boat to me in Sarasota PR in Sept 02. It happened as he was getting on plane for the first time, the blade broke off at the base and landed between 2 cats. That could have been a major catastophy. Maximus borrowed us some 4 blades so we could at least do some of the PR. Jim replaced those for Stan Gordon, and then we ordered a set for Radio Active. The same thing happened half way through the next PR, Jim admitted he had problems with overseas subcontractors, and would replace them or fix them. So 3 mos went by I used my 4 blades, put 60 plus hours on them with out any problems, and then decided we wanted something larger, so I called again, and explained the situation. Jim and John said they were extremely busy and would make my new props. I have been very patient, and am a pretty easy going guy, but c'mon, 15 plus months. I just left another message last week, still no call back. Tell me how to handle the situation, Thanks, I'm all ears :) Jeff Jassby

Rick(osg)
Ordered them with Philly.Cant wait to try them. |
Re: Herring Props.....
I happened to witness a SCL boat sling a Herring blade from a brand new prop and take out the lower unit. Pretty ugly!! I have heard that they are very fragile props....

Re: Herring Props.....
Troutly....why are you selling these props....??? What are you using now???

Re: Herring Props.....
Im am currently running a set of 34P 6 Blade Hering's on my boat. They are by far the best propeller I have ever run. I originally ran a 5 blade prop from another company, and could not keep the props together, they broke every time out. The company blamed it on too much horsepower, or too high of a X dimension. I ended up buying a set of the 6 blade Hering's and have not had a problem since. I also tried the 5 blade Hering and had the same perfect trouble free results. I was gernading a drive every 3 trips out and propellers almost every trip out, since changing to the Hering's I have not had any problems including drive issues. My driving habits have not changed, only the props. Alot of companies will tell you there props are the same metal and this and that. The truth is, nothing I have tried works better then my Hering's. They are worth the money and the props show it time and time again.

Re: Herring Props.....
I too slung a Hydromotive. Mine was a P-4 and it took only an hour or two of use.

Re: Herring Props.....
I've tried both Herring and Mercury on my boat. I found a huge plus in the Herrings. Yes sometimes Jimmy takes a bit of time, but I have had phone calls from him at his shop, 11pm, letting me know the status on my props. Look at it this way, he's a busy boy and you can't rush fine art! I will second 3DO, he was cracking props from his previous prop supplier, as well as breaking drives, put the herrings on and no more issues. To much horsepower, please, those are Teague motors!
