Other than the delicate low tension metric oil ring on the j/e pistons gm installs in these motors they are good beefy ,motors. The 450 hp 502 h.o is pretty much the same motor as a 502 mpi (the long block). Whats the name of your boat? Before summers over maybe i'll see you at hardy pond,Smitty

What's wrong with your motors Don? I thought they were fairly new.

Re: 1800runsnew??

Ian they are on the home stretch I built them about 350 hrs ago. I'm no engine builder and have had my share of problems and am just plain sick of wrenching. I need bullet proof power or just get out of boating all together. I'm trying to decied wether to Have a set of 496's built locally at Performance Engineering or sell what I have and buy a set of Crate motors. The motors that I've built are 330's on steroids still all cast internals so I would buy a rotating assembly and have Performance machine the blocks and assemble them. The combination that I have now made 505 hp at 5600 but really dont care about the power anymore just want turn key stuff! Its been two seasons of wrenching trying to keep them going and I'm sick of it! I have a friend that has a 1989 Baja with a 365 hp mag in it and never turns a wrench....what gives? I never stop!!!
There I feel better.......sorry to vent, Hows the BT running?

Black Thunder is running well except for a few teething issues. We were at the Leopa poker run last weekend. It ran 70 with 8 people, full gas, coolers, etc. I'm still wrenching but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Why not freshen yours up?

dyno 08-04-2004 11:05 AM

Re: 1800runsnew??

Ian like I said they are cast internal motors its time to upgrade so I think I'll have some 496's built at Performance ....still looking at all the possibilities

Re: 1800runsnew??

Well then build some 540's. :D The cost difference is small. Just need a couple of 502 blocks.

Re: 1800runsnew??

Ian.....I thought about that but then the rest of the stuff I have would be small...heads are Merlin ovals, intake Edelbrock Rpm,carbs 800 holley.....oil coolers are stock mag coolers, it just opens up a huge can of worms. I want to get out without it costing me my first born! I really dont care if it makes a huge ammount of power it just needs to be turn key....

Re: 1800runsnew??

Your present engine set-up should be about as reliable as a stone. My last boat had 400hp 454's that I put 600 hrs on without taking off the valve covers. Accesories are going to give you trouble regardless of what the engines are. All boats require some maintanence. Maybe you should make friends with a good mechanic to take care of those instances.

Re: 1800runsnew??

I'm too tight to pay a uncertified machanic wantabe to do anything.......most of my problems have been of my own doing at assembly... This time I'll pay the pro's!Run the new ones on the dyno with all the accesories on them and have some piece of mind when I turn the key in the spring!!!
