Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
looks kinda chinsy.

Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
Actually I think it looks like the upgraded drives that BIGGUS put on his CIG. I can't remember what they are called right now...BRAIN FART!

KONRAD'S :D |
Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
Don't really care what the heck it looks like, is it stronger?
|
Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
A restyled case should pretty well kill the value of used bravos. Of course, the rebuilt ones will cost the same while new ones will cost more because they are discontinued.

Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
Why no dual prop? did volvo patent that?
|
Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
I don't expect it to be any stronger, just easier and quieter shifting, no clunk like the old ones. It just kinda easily and silently goes in and out of gear like a hydraulic trans. A nice improvement, but the stronger drive is down the road,I heard maybe Miami show introduction?

Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
There was an article in last months power boat with pics... they re-desined the top cap to be stronger and the main focus was on the shifting, like magic said..
|
Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
I bet it will look pretty tight with an ITS setup.
|
Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
Konrad is working on a shiftable outdrive now. Heard from P4-33, they sponsor him.
|
Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
It looks like an omc king cobra drive. They also shift way better than the old ones.
|
Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
Question: Why do we need a new XR drive, don't the old ones break often enough?

Great idea, for mini-vans. |
Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
Volvo's patents must have run out, I mean they didn't even release the bravo drive until the cone-clutch patent volvo owned ran out...now it looks like a Volvo..only painted black.
|
Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
I kinda like the look, but then I own Volvos. I suppose that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Too bad they aren't really any stronger.... :blaster: CMG - I've got a "mini-van" you might not like to meet on the water. Ask Shane, Tantrum, DaveP, SOX, or RAddiction. 92+. With a DuoProp. :D |

Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
Yup! She looks like a volvo/omc offshoot! You would think that with all the marketshare Mercruiser has out there they would want to impress. They sure didn't do their OSO poll research before they let that one out of the box!!!
|
Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
You have to bear in mind that 95% of the Bravos made go on "everyday" boats. High-performance installations are pretty much a sideline for Mercury. Mercury Racing, on the other hand, would probably love to see a really new drive.

Sounds like old age is catching up to you....92+ |
Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
They look like they can still be "blowed up" with the right efforts.

Precisely. If the internals are essentially the same, why should anything change? After all, Fred Kiekhafer himself said that Bravos were never intended to go with engines over 300 hp.... Maybe they're trying to copy Konrad's look. |
Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
Were these on the back of a Sonic by any chance?
They aren't too bad, way too close in design to a Volvo though, hence Volvo - I'm sure - will use that somehow against Merc. in the next go-round of "why they are better and..." (in smaller boats at least...)

Re: Merc's new look for the XR drive
lol! It's the chicken or the egg theory of outdrives, who had it first and who had it best? Then again if they would just not grenade, they can make 'em look like whatever the hell they want! People would take function over form all day long if it means you can boat all season without having to keep a spare drive in your truck. :D
