Got this out of my lower unit
 

Check our this wad of fishing line. When I finally got the prop off, this is what I found. Some of the seal came out with it. I am really surprised how well the gears look in this motor.... it's a 1972 Merc. 50 hp and to my knowledge (it's been in my family since new) has never been taken apart. Just regular gear fluid changes.

Now to get a new seal and put it back together.

Tinker we got it off with the gear puller. Got the carrier out by putting the prop back on, the nut back on, then pulling on the prop. Came out without much effort really. Now, if I could just find the damn seal. Tried 3 places so far.... no luck.

I have found seal for a buddies atv that way :)
