Whats the excuse for Manhasset?
We were outside Bridgeport on Sunday for the poker run and couldnt believe that Maximus was at least 5 miles ahead of any other boat like Redwind 46 skater/1400 hp, Color me bad 36 skater 150 mph...Outerlimits and the rest of them. Now I can understand the v boats getin beat but if these Cats cant run in a 2' chop what good are they??? That Maximus is bad ass...had to be goin 120 when it passed us with or without an engine hatch!!!!

Re: Whats the excuse for Manhasset?
Maybe he's just a better navigator.
Or maybe he just knew the route to take so he wouldnt have to slolom the lobster pots. :D |
Re: Whats the excuse for Manhasset?
I was outside bridgeport as well but it seemed like i was the only spectator in a performance boat. At least i didnt see anyone else. From what i remember the cig was first followed by the nor-tec then the big skaters. From my prospective it look like the cats were riding great just not as hard. Both were really goin though.

Re: Whats the excuse for Manhasset?
I was in a 46 Searay just west of the channel

Re: Whats the excuse for Manhasset?
That was a pretty big two foot chop. I guess the 1/2 million boaters out on sunday didn't make any waves .
I'm sure Ozzy was close by.. Johnny O , would have been right there if he did not loose a power steering belt. 42 GTX. Color Me Bad had a little motor trouble. |
Re: Whats the excuse for Manhasset?
TSTGUN next time get out there and join in the fun in the 2'chop

Re: Whats the excuse for Manhasset?
I was running full throttle in my 25' er....in the back of the pack....way in the back...but it was the sh*t...I had a blast...felt almost like real offshore...

Re: Whats the excuse for Manhasset?
I was in a 46' searay and my gun lives in Miami But it I would of loved to run in it!

Re: Whats the excuse for Manhasset?
I thought the conditions were pretty mild. I ran flat out in my top gun the whole run. I can't speak as to what it would be like at 110+ in those conditions, but I ran 80-85 just about the entire run. There were few times I had to back off at all in conditions like that.
Stormrider was sitting in the back of the boat with the arm rest down, I thought he was just working on his tan.... Seriously, I thought the conditions were very mild - at least for the speeds we were running and how my boat handled it. John |
Re: Whats the excuse for Manhasset?
I was *TRYING* to keep up with the pack for the helluvit, but the chop was insane for me and my 22' Formula to stay on the water at 55mph... Frickin' weatherman said "beautiful day...only 1' or less..." yah right Einstein...
A couple of times I hit one of those infamous LI Sound "rogue waves" that launched me about 5' in the air. Needless to say I am about 1" shorter now... ....which reminds me.. I need to check my fuel tank. I think one of the straps let go on a hard landing... :( It's always a challenge in LI Sound..between the pots, the oyster bed poles, and the floating crap... -Larry |

Re: Whats the excuse for Manhasset?
IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUGUST 22, 2004
Tom Abraham’s 45 Cigarette Maximus captures the MANHASSET BAY GOLD CUP TROPHY at 130+ MPH! At the 11th annual running of the MANHASSET BAY GOLD CUP POKER RUN on Sunday, August 22, 2004, hosted by LaMotta’s Restaurant in Port Washington, NY, Tom Abraham came out of the gate and never looked back as the fleet chased him around the 75 mile course over choppy seas on Long Island Sound. Initially starting out as a duel between last year’s winner, John O’Loughlin and his 42 Outerlimits GTX named “All Fired Up”, and Ed LaGuardia’s 37 Outerlimits, Abraham’s Cigarette with Richie Zul powerplants was able to establish a half-a-boat lead until his engine hatch cover blew off…an interesting tactic to gain more speed! As the mechanical gremlins got busy on O’Loughlins’ boat causing a power steering belt to fry, Art Damast in his 46 Skater, “Red Wind” was the next closest competitor with Ozzie Castellnau’s “Wizard of Oz” in close pursuit. One of the fastest boats in the mix was Vinny Rifice’s 36 Skater, ”Color Me Bad”, but the seas were too rough for Vinny to maintain his 160 mph bursts. Guy LaMotta, Jr. in his Cigarette “Competition 39” was maintaining a 90+ mph clip to and was the 3rd V-bottom at the Bridgeport, Connecticut checkpoint. Chasing him was Ted Lambert in his 94+ mph 42 Fountain, “VaVoom” and lucky Tom Fancher in his 37 Outerlimits, the real winner of the day when he pulled an all club flush and won the $5,000.00 Grand Prize in the Poker Run portion of the event. Greg Katz was running good in his 35 Fountain, “Ligtning Strikes”, but impressed the crowd with his crew’s uniforms and won the BEST LOOKING CREW TROPHY. John Buscema entered his 1st poker run with his new 38 Cigarette Top Gun, “Loose Canon”, supplied by Ocean Performance of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, and won the BEST LOOKING BOAT TROPHY. THE KING OF THE CATS TROPHY went to Art Damast and crew in his magnificent 46 Skater, “Red Wind”. Just a few positions behind was George Magnifico of FASTBOATS, Inc., in his 36’ Eliminator Cat, the northeast distributor for Eliminator Powerboats. Guy LaMotta, Sr. was presented the “SPIRIT OF THE NPBA” AWARD because he and Billy have been offshore racing together for over 25 years…and they still dig it! This was a great event for all of the newcomers and veterans of the sport. We hope to see you all on September 18th for the GLEN COVE HI-STAKES POKER AND RADAR RUN, back on Long Island Sound… …where all of the Kings and Queens Play! www.nationalpowerboat.com |
