Compare & Contrast

I was hoping some members could compare some different boats for us. The mrs wants a small cabin space. I doubt if a full cabin would be used. I personally like low free board, sit down boats. We'd prefer a single, but may be stuck with twins because we are shopping used. 70's would be acceptable, 80's would be preferred. I want a tough boat that will survive the offshore enviroment and is built well enough to not rot out or break up. You can expand on the list if you feel like it. Here's our list:

29 Kryptonite
28 Kachina
28 Active Thunder
288 Sunsation
28 Apache Brave
28ss Cigarette
27 Squadron
28 Pantera

I know that a bunch of you are going to say Fountain, Cigarette or Scarab. I'm sorry, but those are not on our list. :D

What ya mean? I see 28Cig

Re: Compare & Contrast

The 28 Cig SS is almost 20 years old. I'm talking about a modern Cig. There is no way I could afford one. I actually have a soft spot for the classic boats. If things work out correctly, we should be able to buy a older V for less than the trade value of our cat. The problem is going to be selling the cat. I have no clue what the boat is really worth.

Re: Compare & Contrast

28 Pantera off of that list, plus several board members have VERY nice ones for sale. (TimG & Danger Kitty)

How 'bout an older Formula? Those make a nice classic.

Sean, why don't you shoot me an e-mail on it. It looks like a bit more of a project than what I was shopping for, but I'm a sucker for projects. A couple of questions that need to be answered: is the interior complete? The drives, engines, gimbles and not included? What engines were in it? Is it just me or is the cabin missing the vinyl too? What is the distance between the transom and the first bulkhead?

If you like the classic low free board look, then it would be Magnum all the way. Here is one of the best out there for sale.

I bet there's a 23 foot Concord out there for sale somewhere Tim!!! LOL!!

I'd be going Pantera or perhaps a 29 Laveycraft (if you can find a used one of those)

Re: Compare & Contrast

foul...that's cold man... :) wonder where that boat is today...feel sorry for the guy that bought it :)

specs on the 28 are:

28ss hull only...no engines, drives, transom assemblies, no trailer. It previously ahd small blocks with Volvo drives

has trim tabs, 2 fuel tanks(the forward on has been moved ahead of the forward bulkhead for some reason...dunno why...I would have the tanks pressure tested before use because I don't know their condition. the helm is all there, but the gauges are old an probably need replacement.

i have the cabin interior which is blue vinyl and old...it can be cleaned up though...

the cockpit interior is complete, however, the rear bench is in sorry shape...wood is rotted and vinyl is coming apart at the seams.

I also have a bunch of old parts from my other 28 including winshield fram, and variosu deck hardware that sill go with the boat.

the boat structuraly sound and i wne over it with a plastic mallet prior to my purchase. all stringers, bulkheads, transom and bottom are solid.

feel free to call me if you have any other questions...516 455 1200

i just realized i may have hijacked this thread...sorry guys...sorry Cord... :(

I'd check out JOKER.
Its a sitdown badazz single!
Not sure if there are any used around.

Also the 29 EXTREME is real nice!

I was just going to say the same thing. The only problem with those is the the fact that you'd probably have to buy new. Also look at the 30 superboat.

Re: Compare & Contrast

Phantom makes a 29 sit down model with a small cabin too... but used they are far and few between.

Tim, why don't you look for a used 28 daytona or something.... they have a "cabin" of sorts... and 80 is easy, even with a single engine.

Also, I hear Hugh would sell his boat if the offer were right.....

Re: Compare & Contrast

CBDRAGON-I got your information the other day, I must say THANKS! I'd highly recommend that everybody go out and buy a Dragon powerboat! Plug, plug.

Mike, I'd like to, but this cat insurance thing is just insain. That's the only reason that we're shopping for a V. The only reason.

Sean-I figured that somebody would hijack the thread sooner or later. Just didn't think it would be this soon! ;)

Re: Compare & Contrast

That magnum looks kinda interesting. The price is out of line though. Anybody have more info on it?

magnum27 08-25-2004 04:03 PM

Re: Compare & Contrast

Magnums that are updated and look new bring BIG money. I have seen some that are restored and look brand new with VOLVO drives sell in the 60's so for this one, it isn't that uncommon to see at that price. There is a Magnum starfire for sale that is all original and just a real nice boat and is is selling for 50K. The starfire's bring a little more than the sports just because of there uniqueness and taller engine compartment. But like everyone else, I am just bias. I have always loved magnums.
