What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

What The Hell Happend to $50k or less market? I have a great deal on a very repspectable older offshore boat (1990 34 Scarab) I cant give it away! not even a phone call! (would someone at least call me and act interested) Is it the Wellcraft name? (its not all that bad, or is it?) I personally have had no complaints with Scarab and It for sure cant be the price! (39k) a Cigarette is twice the price! is it really twice the boat? This boat is a steal and yet open for offers. I mean I see boats moving but it seams only the high end go fast and I mean High end or under 20k junk and yes I mean junk. What happend to middle end market?

Re: What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

It all boils down to this .... "I" bought one of those >50K Boats in April ...So just like everything else I do ....the bottom falls out right after I pay $$$ for one of those >50K boats ... Simple .... Just a note...dont ever get behind me in a checkout line ...never fails ..

Re: What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

I pretty positive there is always bad blood with any used boat purchase and/or sometimes new and not all 50k or less boats are bad. I have seen many people spend 150k or more and yet get burned. There should still be a market for the 50k or less. Not all can afford or want to pay more for a boat worth more than there house.

Re: What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

From my own personal experience, I find that the $50k and under market is very seasonal. Sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss. 2 Years ago, I was watching all the sites for that really good boat value.I had a hole burning in my pocket, but couldn't find anything worth spittin' on. Spring rolls around and WHAM!, more deals than I could shake a stick at.
My advice- Take High Quality, detailed pics of the boat in and out of the water with a nice backdrop for scenery(not just on the trailer in a back alley).Marketing and exposure are everything when you have a great valued boat for sale. You'll find the right buyer-just be patient. My .02 cents.

Take care, Drive safe!

Re: What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

The whole market has been tough dude .... but .... with National on the ropes , there may be a bit of a swing back to reality for a while ... may stall the trade up every 8 months trend and the ripple effect may help the lower and middle range market ???

Ahhhh screw it !!! Trade that thing in somewhere and get yourself a nice fat payment book !!! By the way .... are you going to throw out a plug for the 9/11 Hot Rod Run ???

Re: What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

I agree, I am not unable to unload my 30k dollar boat (which appraised for 40k) for even 20k on a trade in!! Brand new motors with warranties............unreal............I had one tire kicker, thats it. So I am stuck with it for now..........I feel your pain!!!

A acquaintence of mine locally has same boat (34 ft scarab)except it's from late 80's,he bought it minus engines, built a decent pair of 454's for it,spent about 40k between boat/motors/rigging,actually in decent shape, decided he wanted to sell it last year. Put it up for 35k,he's down to 20k,just wants it gone and still gets NO CALLS!!

I'm realizing that unless you're giving something away right now, it's almost impossible to sell....Pocketbooks are getting tight.

Re: What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

There is hardly any middle class any more, thats the people who would be buying that boat. If you pick up Hot Boat mag and read the test drives, theres alot of new boats, granted not 34 footers but close going for 68,000.00 to 89,000.00, not with big power but still nice.

Re: What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

I think a lot of it has to do with financing. For a lot of guys it's easier to swallow a $500-$800 monthly payment for a new boat than a $50k one time nut for a used boat. Especially first time boat buyers that haven't taken a hit come resale. That's why I'll never buy another new boat or automobile.

Me too. Mine is "I feel" severely underpriced at 12k. and not even a call. I'm sure if I took some one out for a ride they'd buy it but I can't ever get that far. :(

Re: What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

The market is really screwed up right now. With insurance and gasoline, and the fact that lending agencies are not as easy to work with it is hard for everyone including dealers.

But there is hope!

True Story;

A buddy on LKN had a 1999 Baja 272 open bow! He owed $49,000 which put him about $10,000+ upside down in the boat. He wanted to sell it to upgrade, and had resigned the fact that he was going to have to put up money to sell it.

He is talking to a friend that just happens to mention that a buddy of his is looking for a family bow rider. My buddy sends him ONE (1) picture and the guy calls him. He asks a few questions about the boat and then asks what he will take for it.

He says he owes $49K and does not want to make anything on the boat and will take the payoff. SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This just happened about three weeks ago.

I could not believe it!!!

You just have to find that perfect buyer!

Re: What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

$50K or less? Hell, I can't even get rid of my little crownline for 5 grand. Had it on e-Bay for a week....tons of e-mails, phone calls, hassle, etc. 70+ people had it on their watch list. Not a bid. Had it in the local paper as well..same story. People asking me questions like I'm demanding top $$ for the boat. "Can you transport it to St. Louis?" Sure, I'll drive halfway across the country and back to deliver a $5K boat. Not to mention the part of the ad that said "No trailer."
I'm about to give it away to someone at this point. (Just not to any of the people who sent me stupid e-mails through e-bay.) It's not money I want out of it...I just need to get rid of it to get a new boat. I'm out of space on my dock.
Done with my rant. I feel better now. :D

I dont mean this to be negative in any way, but I think the name "Scarab" is not too desirable any longer. At that time there wasn't as much available. There are too many die-hard performance boats available and due to technology advances since Scarabs were hot, not many people desire them anymore.

Re: What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

If you can buy brand new for 69K-89K-109K, where's the market for over priced 10-15-20 year old units? Sorry, should be in the 5K-10K-15K range. I know some boats hold value, but alot of it seems to be sentimental value. I'm looking for a boat, not your history and old stories. Oh yeah, anyone selling for free:D

Look at the classifieds just in OSO. There is plenty of 2001-2003 T/B/B go-fast in the 100k range, new enough? P.S. nice looking rig!

Well, I must say I was thinking I would never sell my boat a few weeks ago. I got a call from a guy in Cleveland, we negotiated a price, he came out for a test drive and was happier than a pig in $h!t. He is now a proud owner of an 86' SCARAB Panther.

Take me off the list!

Re: What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

I was watching TV and a commercial came on and said that the middle class was gone. I'm not sure where the rest of us went, but I guess it's just me left to hold down the fort as the only remaining middle class guy in the US.

So, since I am the only remaining member of the middle class, and I already have an under 50k boat, you are out of luck.

If Kerry gets elected, I assume that the middle class will re-emerge from where they are hiding, and the cheap boat market will take off again.

SHAGNASTY 09-12-2004 11:29 AM

Re: What Happend to The $50k or Less Market?

Damn it all, if thats what it takes to sell my boat then I am voting for Kerry, lol
