Does your twin engine boat...

...plane on one engine?
Just curious. I have been told mine would; never tried it until this weekend. I did run the port engine out of fuel once, and stayed on plane with the SB engine for a mile or two.

This weekend, I found myself very low on fuel on the port engine, with a little more on the SB. I decided to give it a shot, and make a run for the fuel dock a couple miles away; and save port fuel for docking.

She eased up slowly, on the SB motor drive tucked, with port off and in neutral, prop on, port drive trimmed out; tabs all the way down. I was able to raise the tabs once on plane, trim out the powered drive, and run 30mph. Needless to say, I was pretty impressed with the efficiency of the stepped hull, planing with only 425HP. Props are B1 28P, and I doubt it would do it with Hydros.

I spun a hub out of a prop on my boat 1994 Baja 32 caliber with 27 Mirage and could only get 8.7 mph before the other prop would blow out

A 35 Fountain won't get on plane with one engine. It will run 7.5 mph though. :D

33 Donzi NO WAY!! Kind of sucks when you blow an impeller and have to limp back to your dock.

After a fresh coat of bottom paint and a fresh set of props, oh yeah!
I had lost one tranny. I decided to give a go with one engine. It took a bit, but she did get up and go, then I backed off. All 31 tons!!! 57 feet long all aluminum. The hull design I guess just made it work like a cat and gave it enough lift...
I couldn't believe it....

i was on plane when my stbd drive went and i stayed on plane easing off and just barely on the stick. one drive heavy boat alot of hp probably the best way to smoke a drive wouldnt do it again unless emergency.

I have tripps, and I can't get up on two.

Re: Does your twin engine boat...

I rode for a while on one but backed off when I knew I was straining things. I might have been able to go farther but did not want to push it. Then it was slow going.

i had a drive break on a poker run one time. the u joints threw and it broke the bellow. water was coming in and i was 50 miles from the trailer. i had everone go up front, and put the stick all the way down and it did it. it got up to about 30. im sure it wasnt easy on the drive, but there wasnt much other choice. 27' baja with twins.

Re: Does your twin engine boat...

Ive done it a couple of times. blew an impeller 20 miles from the dock. it was late and i wanted to get back before dark. i knew the 37's could run on plane on one motor so i thought what the hell, i'll try my 32' . took a little bit of doing but got it up on plane. rode the rest of the way back at about 35. could push it to almost 45 but the engine oil temp really got high so was able to back it off to 35 mph and it was a nice comfortable ride back. no problems of any kind resulting from those rides on one motor.

Mine want either. Probably not worth hurting a drive anyway.

I ran it on the brand drive with the brand new upper, and all still under warranty.

Re: Does your twin engine boat...

I have four Yanmar diesels. And it's hard to convince people that this is better than having two large diesels but the ability to plane on only two motors is just one of the benefits. She tops out at just over 80 mph but will run 62 with only three engines running and about 40 mph with only two engines running. Getting on plane with only two engines is a bit tricky and requires me to play with the tabs a little but it's possible. This is an important safety issue even though losing two diesel engines at the same time is rather unlikely...

Funny this post hit when it did. had a engine not start this weekend.... (Turns out is was the neutral safety wire had come loose).... planed but slow in a Formula 302 with full tabs brought back up to #4 after getting going.

Getting up on 2 is hard enough for it. No way will it on one.

Re: Does your twin engine boat...

my 28SS could with the small blocks and bravo drives and no trim tabs. found this out after running out of gas by forgettting to switch the tanks over  the non powersteering motor was the only one i could get fired up...it was starting to get dark and we were a ways from home, so i figured i'd give it a try... :)

my cafe racer can also...540 ci with TRS drives :) had a few valve train failures last year and more often than not, i had to come back on one engine...luckily the power steering engine was the one that kept running... :) tabs down, broke motor drive up...came up slow, and sure beat the hell out of chugging all the way home :)

Re: Does your twin engine boat...

32 Skater (5 people 1/2 tank of fuel) One 300X will get it on plane with a 15x30 cleaver. It would not do it with a 14.5x32 cleaver. I have tried taking one prop off with the 14.5x32 cleavers and it still would not get on plane with one motor.

Re: Does your twin engine boat...

Well I guess I made a good choice 2 weeks ago. when we got back on Sunday night our port side engine was really low on fuel and come Monday I had to drive it to the Launch about 7 miles away. got about 2 miles from the Launch and my port side engine stalled out. I was only going around 40 so I slowed down and Idled with one engine to the Launch. I didn't think it would have been good to try to get back up on plane.
