Scary Day at the lake Yesterday!!

Man pulls shotgun on a bunch of boaters. The gun misfires!!!

Yesterday at Lake Tenkiller in NE Ok about 100 boats were rafted up in various rows. Some Dumb SOB was trying to anchor a 50' houseboat and the wind kept pushing him into us. After Three times of this crap and us protecting our boats from major damage we had had it. We screemed at him to take his piece of crap houseboat away from us before he hurt someone or damaged a boat. As he was leaving he did hit the front of a 32 Baja and knocked a guy off into the water. Need less to say that just escalalated the problem and he pulled into the back of the cove after more words were exchanged. After almost hitting some more boats he turned around and started back by us. This time he pulled a 410 shotgun and started aiming it around at the crowed. He loaded it, and pulled the trigger. It did not fire. Fortunally we were with some Okla State Troopers and thay called for Help from the lake patrol. When they arrived he was arrested and taken to Jail. It was nice to see something nice happed to him after all the mayhem he caused and started. The reason the gun misfired was that the primer was damp. We later found out that he had tried to fire the gun and it had some sort of flare in it. There were lots of familys with kids out there including myself. When we saw the gun we yelled at everyone to get down. It was really scary seeing someone with a gun at the lake where we were expecting to have a fun day.

I did not know if anyone else was out there this weekend. Hope everyone else's weekend was not as eventful.

He is lucky he didn't get shot back at, especially with troopers around. I always carry, even when boating, this nut-job needs to be put away for a long time. People like him are what makes reasonable gun owners look bad. Thanks to him some nanny political group just got their fodder to make legal gun owner more constricted.

You are right!! My buddy did have his pistol with him but it happened so fast that the guy was gone on by by the time he got to it. If the gun had not misfired, it would have caused more commotion and I would assume the he would return fire not knowing it was a flare gun. He probably would have been shot.

Damn, man. I hate to hear that. I'm suprised he didn't get shot. The only thing bad would have been the paperwork... I'm glad you guys are OK.

Are you sure you mean to say this? The reason that I ask, is that all of the responsible concealed carry people that I know always consider themselves lucky that they DON'T have to draw. I wouldn't have drawn on the guy. He didn't shoot anyone. I wouldn't draw on somebody unless I am prepared to have my life ruined as well as his/her. This is a great reason not to drink and "pack." The solution to brandishing is not brandishing back, as the troopers obviously knew.

You don't usually hear "he's lucky he didn't get shot back at" from prudent armed people. That is what makes reasonable gun owners look bad.

The guy on the houseboat made UNREASONABLE gun owners look bad, not us.

I suspect that the true culprit in this cove was wobbly pops. Boat more. Drink less. Leave the gun in a locked safe. Problem solved.

I meant to say he didn't get shot back by the trooper on board. He is lucky the gun did not fire, if the gun fires and he is putting lives in danger then I would feel any concealed carrier would make an action to eliminate the threat. My statement about carrying myself is meant more to illustrate how crazy the world can be. I understand the purpose of a concealed weapons license, I understand my limitations. But if someone is pointing a gun around in your direction acting like they are going to shoot you, and you have no reasonable escape, then Darwin's theories are going to come into play. I know that If I am ever unfortunate enough to be in that situation that I am going to be spending tens of thousands in legal fees. I fully understand that the persons family will come forward with a civil suit trying to say what a great person he was. When I carry I also have two less than lethal options, pepper spray and a spyderco. I can honestly say that I would never consider using the knife, too close for comfort, but it is there. Pepper spray is great, small, light, you can take it places guns are not allowed, and it will thwart off animals.

I agree 100% alcohol and firearms don't mix! I never drink when carrying, not a drop! I I hardly drink in general, usually because I am carrying or I am the driver, and even when I do drink, never enough to become intoxicated.

I don't think my comments make gun owners look bad, I still feel this azzhole makes gun owners look bad. He is a criminal, beyond brandishing a weapon he had intentions of using it in a criminal manner.

someone pulls a gun at me, with the intent to shoot, and im carrying, you can bet your a$$ im shooting before he shoots me. Ill face the legal issues 2nd to loosing my life. This guy pulled the trigger. what would have happened if it went off and killed someone.

I will never pull, unless i am prepared to use it. and i guarantee if someone pulls a loaded gun on me with intent, im pulling to protect myself.

things should not have gotten that far to have a guy pull a gun...if he is that big of a jacka$$, move on and let him be? ~~ call the patrol and let them handle it.

Dblvanos...

Glad that you weren't offended. I think that I get where you are coming from now that I read your second post. I think your first post was easily misinterpreted.

I still don't see how a situation with 100 boats rafted has a shooting solution. There's just too big of a jump from 1 jackoff brandishing at a crowd to a one on one situation where someone has been assaulted and is personally threatened.

The troopers did the right thing, not surprisingly.

That must be one pirate infested lake for people to need shotguns, if you call a peanut gun like a .410 a shotgun. We use those for ground hogs.

Question: The story says that the guy put a flare in a .410 and tried to fire it. I have never seen a .410 ga flare. Must be quick burning? Is there really such a thing as a .410 flare? Mine are all 12 ga.

Maybe I wouldn't have drawn on the guy, but when his peanut gun didn't fire I would have shoved it up his....

Re: Scary Day at the lake Yesterday!!

I didn't see it happen, but I heard from 2 different individuals about a fight that broke out at a bar on our lake (Table Rock in SW MO). To make a long story short, a couple of guys started fighting in the bar and before too long it turned into a bunch of guys fighting down at the docks. The scary part is, one guy ended up getting into his boat, backed up into a couple of boats, and proceeded to run his boat up onto the back of a Scarab. The Scarab owner, who wasn't involved in the fight, apparently had to jump off of his boat to avoid being run over. By this point people were chucking bear bottles at the guy. My friend, who sold the Scarab to his buddy, said the guy was able to back the boat "off" and started to leave. Water patrol was aparently called to the disturbance pulled the guy over for excessive wake in a no wake zone. Another boater went over to the water patrol and informed him of the situation and the guy was arrested. I take any story like this with a grain of salt, but I heard the same story from 2 different people today. Anyone else hear about this?

Tulsa lawyer arrested in gun-pointing incident

By Bob Gibbins, Press Staff Writer
Thursday, September 9, 2004 10:37 AM CDT

A Tulsa attorney was released Monday morning on a $50,000 bond after being arrested for allegedly pointing a firearm at Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers on Lake Tenkiller.

Billy Jack Smith, 47, was arrested by OHP troopers on charges of shooting with intent to kill, assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm on a vessel. Formal charges will be filed in district court.

No shots were fired during the incident that allegedly started when Smith's boat began rocking into other vessels at Party Cove on Lake Tenkiller.

Assistant District Attorney Nikki Baker Dotson said Tuesday afternoon the district attorney's office doesn't have all the reports on the incident.

Reports state OHP Troopers Mike Keeton, Charley Batt and Mike Sherman were paged about a drunk on a boat causing problems at Party Cove on Lake Tenkiller Sunday. OHP Troopers Mike Childress and Gary Fears were at Party Cove before Keeton, Batt and Sherman arrived.

Reports state Keeton, Batt and Sherman were later told a rifle was involved, and the rifle had been allegedly pointed at Childress and Fears. Smith allegedly pulled the trigger on the rifle more than once, but it did not fire.

Reports state Smith was verbally abusive to the troopers. He said the boat was his home, and they could not enter the boat without a search warrant.

He was arrested and placed on an OHP boat for transporting him back to the shore.

Smith allegedly told troopers problems can be squelched by pulling a gun, and "you can permanently end problems by pointing a gun."

Chief District Judge Bruce Sewell set Smith's bond after being notified Monday of his arrest.
