anyone else surprised that so many boats were left in the water? we have snow - so we have snow shovels. In Fl they have hurricanes, wouldn't you have a trailer? Yes, I know some were damaged on land but a lot of pics of boats smashed and sunk.

Actually, if you look at the list again, you will see that only two boats were damaged from Charley and one from Isabel.
Most of the others are insurance salvage from all over the country and many more are brokerage boats.
Not to say that alot of boats were not damaged, I'm just saying there are only 3 on this site!

This is a really good point. BoatUS has done extensive studies on this exact subject. There was a really good article in the July issue of the BoatUS magazine about it. I re-read it during Frances.

They have tracked damages from boats on shore, and boats in the water.
They even followed the success of a few marinas who had different policies.

The story that stands out to me is the one where one marina MADE everybody pull their boats and put them on jack stands. The other marina had key personnel ride the storm out and occasionally retie lines.
In this case the boats on shore were wrecked by the surge, whereas the boats left in the water survived.

It's a hard choice to make. In general, they do a little better in the water, but they have to be tied just right. I think that I might rather have dock rash than a pancake from a collapsed rack and launch.
