Re: SlickNick's 39 oceanexpress project!
What about K&N oil filters? I know they are expensive, and they say K&N so they must be good ... right?
|
Re: SlickNick's 39 oceanexpress project!
K&N is very similar to a Mobil 1 filter, both of which are top of the line. Pure 1 filter is also pretty good, I don't know about these brand new fram filters that have just come out, but over the past few years Fram quality has been very poor. The internal components are not up to par, and they use parts such as carboard end-caps. Also they use a sub-par filter material basically made of coated paper.
The more expensive filters (mobil, pure, K&N, and I'm sure several others) use more expensive technology with synthetic filter material, metal end caps, etc. With engines that cost this much, I would never use anything less than those. I use Mobil 1 oil and Mobil 1 filters only. If I can't find a Mobil 1 filter at the time, I might use the Pure1 or K&N which are similar quality. Of the two my picks would be Mobil1 , then K&N then PureOne in that order. $10 is a small price to protect an expensive engine, no different than buying a quality oil and changing it often the filter is highly important. http://www.mobil1.com/index.jsp http://www.pureoil.com/ http://www.knfilters.com/oilfilter.htm |
Re: SlickNick's 39 oceanexpress project!
Great pictures Expresscat. Bet you can see that rooster from miles away. I'm using AC Delco PF1218. I have the bypass plugged so all of the oil goes through the filter. After 25 hrs there is no noticable pressure loss due to filter clogging. According to the oil filter study, the Delco filter has good construction, good flow and good filtration. And it's cheap, so there's no reason not to change it often.

Re: SlickNick's 39 oceanexpress project!
I agree the Fram HP series are good filters, ran them on the 47 for years. I now use NAPA racing filters only 'cause they are easier to get, always had to order the HP Frams. NAPA filters are made by WIX and come in the HP-4 and HP-6 sizes.
