Question for boat lift for stepped hull boat
A friend of mine is having a boat lift installed. They have a stepped hull boat. Should you notch or otherwise modify the carpeted bunks or is it not necessary. Would the boat sit okay on the stock carpeted bunks? Thanks.

Re: Question for boat lift for stepped hull boat
Yes you should or you can put a hook in the bottom of the boat. Check Myco Trailers for a lift cradle, it fits the boat like a glove as though it was sitting on a trailer. The Myco lift cradle sits on any lift and is u-bolted to the beams. See the Myco banner on OSO for an example.

Re: Question for boat lift for stepped hull boat
Agree you need to modify the lift bunks to match the stepped bottom. You may also need to adjust the depth that the lift goes down, depending on what kind of stop mechanism the lift uses. Mine has chains set to stop the lift at a certain depth. If you have that, you may need to lower the depth the lift decends so that the steps clear the bunks when you back off the lift.

Re: Question for boat lift for stepped hull boat
Short answer is that the bunks should properly nest the hull. I bought a used 12000# Hydro-Hoist and spent several hundred hours mapping the bottom of my hull , the rear bunk area of my hoist, cutting out most of the rear hoist crossmember/bunk and fabricating a new crossmember/bunk setup that was Tig welded together. The bunks are pefectly matched to the hull area between the most rearward step and the transom. The crossmember is bolted in and can be removed for modifications, etc. One thing to be mindful of at this time of year is that in low water conditions you can have a stepped hull get caught on the bunks if the hoist sits on the bottom and there's not enough clearance for hull to float over the bunk.

Re: Question for boat lift for stepped hull boat
Mine just needed another 2x4 added to the bunks behind the step. I measured the hull for the exact/perfect height and fit for my bunks when I installed my lift.

Here is a Myco Cradle, My Nortech fits perfectly on it, just like my Myco trailer. I also got the extension platform in the back so I can work on the drives, or change props easily. :D Jeff

Re: Question for boat lift for stepped hull boat
Thanks for the info guys, I figured it would probably be a good idea, but when you don't know, you ask, and what better place than OSO.
I guess that is what intrigues me the most (besides Troutly's library), is that an answer to any question is just the keyboard away. Again, thanks...Russ |

Re: Question for boat lift for stepped hull boat
Russ,
I totally agree with Steve and JASSMAN about the MYCO cradle. I put one under the 41 a couple of years ago and have been TOTALLY satisfied with it. It centers the boat perfectly everytime and gives the boat alot more support than the standard lift bunks. Give Bill at call at MYCO. Robert |
