I'm guessing that the head gasket let go. The truck runs great! If it wasn't for a non existant engine temp and a strange gurgling sound behind the dash, we'd have no indication of the problem. I took a look at a head gasket and it would be possible to connect the oil passage to a coolant passage without damaging a fire ring. It's a long path to take, but it's feasible. Guess what I get to do for my next project?

Ah...it's the curse of the Foul that caused this, so why would I want him to help me fix it? :D

Tim, that's ugly. How much oil was left in the pan?.

I have heard where coolant gets into the cylinders but not where oil gets into the coolant system.

Don't even go there... :D

Hp-I went through 6 quarts of oil-all of it into the coolant. The pan capacity is some 10-12 quarts. In this case, I'm guessing that I shorted between a pressurized oil passage and a coolant passage. The oil being a higher pressure than the coolant, is forced into the coolant. The opposite would be true if it was a oil return passage. The strange thing is that the oil inhibits the passage of heat. That pic of my finger into the radiator was taken about 10 minutes after shutting the truck off. It wasn't even warm.

While we are on the topic...I don't suppose you wouldn't mind me bringing up a certain boat that wouldn't start...yep, the Foul struck twice on this trip. :D

I take NO responsibility for the flat spot on Ken's starter!!!! If we were to compare this non-starting incident to a health issue, your health insurance company would deam this "a pre-existing condition" and deny your claim!!! Therefor, NOT MY FAULT.

And someone who is about to be CUT OFF should keep his mouth shut and finger's at his side instead of pointing them at anyone!!! :p

I like having Foul on board, especially racing other boats that are supposedly much faster than mine. I think Foul's curse worked for me on that one and against our opponent!! Thanks Mike!! :D

About to be cut off? Apparently there was a preemtive strike!

Doesn't deisels run oil coolers in the radiator passages?
Maybe a blown line there?

Thats gotta suck how did you make it home?

The truck still runs great! No indication of a problem at all. I'm thinking that is because the fire rings are still good. I was hoping for a bad cooler too. I stopped by a shop and they said that it was definetly a head gasket. They've seen it before. I'm going to ask a couple more people before tearing into it though.

Re: Well, Cord and I are back from Maine!

Cord,
More than likely it's the oil cooler, you need to pull the filter and the filter mount which is the cover of the oil cooler, there is a gasket and then the oil cooler element, factory manual says you can test the element by applying 70 PSI air pressure to check for leaks, if you install a new cooler don't forget to remove the shipping plugs before installing and then tighten the cover bolts back to 18 ft/lbs, to pull the cover off you will need to remove the turbocharger oil supply line, when reinstalling it torques to 11 ft/lbs.
Might want to flush the cooling system also :D :D

Good luck,
Caleb

Doesn't sound hard to get too. I'll tear into it in a couple of days....
