Is there a difference in ride 38TG and 35Cafe

Is there a big difference in ride? If so,,is it a noticeable big difference? I'm shopping for a 35 Cafe or 38 Top Gun. I know the used market shows there is not a real big difference in price. I know this depends on engine and drive package. I'm shopping for between a 91 to 96.

How is the ride between the two. They are both heavy boats and wave crushers. I'll be shopping when I get back from Iraq.

Not sure if there is an old thread on this or not.

How bout' some help Cig guys. :D

Thanks,

Shawn

Both are fine boats, but 3 feet is 3 feet (or in this case 2'6" since 38 Cigarettes's are actually 37'6". They both run great in the rough but the 38 is better.

Re: Is there a difference in ride 38TG and 35Cafe

I love my Cafe am very happy with it's performance and ride characteristics...but...

I've run both and I'd have to agree that the 38 edges the 35 slightly only due to that extra length...and with similar power and dirves they will actually run the same speed...so if I were looking at both boats in the same price range, I would buy the Gun. The Gun will resell at a higher number and is still more desireable than the Cafe.

Sean and OC are acurate about the ride.

A Cafe will be cheaper all other stuff being equal. Which means when you come to sell it more people will have access to purchasing it. Mind you everyone wants a Cigarette and once that's setup they want a Top Gun! :D

Most people who buy a Cafe Racer buy a Top Gun or in GL's case a Tiger. Gary bought a T/S Top Gun & Kevin bought a T/S Top Gun.

I've been in a Fiberglass Top Gun (96), a Kevlar Top Gun (92), and my Carbon Fiber Top Gun (91) - there is quite a difference.

I'm looking for the best ride with power being secondary. Minimum of 500HP and hydraulic steering.

Lucky not too sure about the boats with trannies. Heard good stories about your boat as well as ones with trannies. Thats just something else that has a possibility of breaking. Trying to cut it down to engine outdrive.

Of course Lucky Strike , a great deal on Cig thats a lil' older and cleaner could sway my decision! :D :D

They ride different mainly because of the different lay-up - Fiberglass - Kevlar - Carbon Fiber. The heavier the boat the more it seems to ride nose heavy in my experience.

We have a Velvet Drive Tranny. It is the best of the best of the best. You say you don't want drive failure? Why are you looking at a Bravo boat then? :D

I guess it all depends on what you like. We had a 38 Flat Deck and we swore we would never buy another Fiberglass 38 Cigarette. We like the lighter boat with less power that goes faster.

The Cafe is sleeker and has a lot more head room. It is light and therefore less HP to get it going. Both are great. What fits your personality best?

I have had both and if I had to do it all over agian would not buy anything else. TG's are in more demand. Probably get a better deal on a Cafe.

And then he went from 38 to 41...all our great boats, but IMO if your looking for the best ride, 3 feet is 3 feet and for comparable layups, the bigger the boat the better the ride...that being said, how it is rigged can have a big influence on the ride. Just switchin the prop rotation will usually make a big difference on the how the boat feels. Add to that different props and X dimensions...best thing is to go for sea trials in your top picks and then chose. Pretty tough to go wrong between a Cafe and a TG!

Also, if your looking for reliability, you don;t necessarly have to shy away from trannies...if there good, they are less a weak link then the drives once you decide you want more HP...the TG hull comes alive over 70mph and gets even smoother in the ruff..

Cig1 --- How did the previous owner feel your boat handled 700's, I'm trying to come up with a plan on putting 700's in a Ts TG, and what drives will be req'd to be bulletproof, and still not throw the handling off.

I never spoke to the owner that put the 700's in. I heard it was an older gentelman and it was just TOO FAST for him... would think it would run somewhere around 105.

If your pimp hand is strong ... the XR's on Stelling boxes with the Sportmaster lowers will handle it ... othewise you'll prolly need Speedmasters :drink:

That's what I was thinking :D I was thinking the 3a's would be enough to handle it. But how much difference is there in weight between 3a's with hydraulic steering, and 6's. With the 6's you would never have to look at it again
I would like to see a ts with partial staggered set-up with 3a's --kinda seems like the best of both worlds??

I've never seen a Staggered 38 Top Gun T/S. I've never seen a T/S Gun with 3s either. I think it's go #6 or stay with Bravos.

I've never seen a staggered ts either, but why not if you're moving the engines anyway. As far as the 3a's to 6's -- i was just thinking from a dollar amount, and that there are lots of heavy Apache 41's out there with 700 + hp running on 3a's. 3a's should play with 700's in a TS I would think.

We aren't big Bravo fans but if you are going to run a T/S with 700HP, I would go with Bravos. Even if you blow one or two, when it comes time to sell it will be a lot easier to than with #3s. Your comparing apples to oranges when your talking about a 41' Apache & a 38 T/S Top Gun.

Again, my $.02

delsol 10-11-2004 03:39 PM

Re: Is there a difference in ride 38TG and 35Cafe

Sorry i wasn't comparing them, just stating a fact thought that if 3a's will stand up to the heavier/stickier Apache hull then they should easily be able to handle the TS.
As far as selling being easier with Bravo's-- I don't know aren't most looking for more speed without the bravo busting issue. If Glads are the same bottom and some are staggered then why not in a gun??
I'm asking to get some feedback if this would be a plausible direction to go in, besides if I were to put this combo together and it worked like I think it can, there would be no reason to ever sell it :drink: But I guess you never know!

Once you move the engines to add trannys, there is no more room to even do a short stagger...there's a bulkhead and fuel tanks in the way.

Re: Is there a difference in ride 38TG and 35Cafe

OK good to know, How would the bravo arneson conversion work on a TS -- it wouldn't affect the CG too much that way.

But how would it affect handling on a step bottom -- remembering that it will be a pleasure/poker run boat. Would it have a tendency to feel loose in the stern and possibly unpredictable.

Re: Is there a difference in ride 38TG and 35Cafe

Someone said that there is more head room in the Cafe than the TG? Is that true? If so anyone know how much? I was interested in upgrading toa newer (to me) TG or Cafe in the next year or so. Currently I have an '85 357 Formula. Great boat but I want something newer but don't want to lose a lot of cabin room, amenities, etc.

Also, anyone know if you could get a/c in both the Cafe and the TG?
