Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
I am trying to figure out what to do with my cabin in my boat. The inside is going to be gutted and I am going to replace the stringers and everything around them. What I am wondering is if I should replace all the interior or just run it with out. We do not stay on the boat so that is not a real concern. As for resale I will keep this boat for a VERY long time so again it is not so much of a issue. What are the pros and cons hear?

Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
Don't finish it, considering your speed of execution that would take another 12-15 years.

Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
HAHA GL!!! Actually that would speed things up QUITE a bit. One of the things that I am considering is that it would help will all the deck flex of the really early 302's. No matter what way I go it will take a LOT of weight out of the boat. Any ideas if that will screw up the balance of the boat?

Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
If I where a single guy I would want a boat with no cabin and 6 man stand up bolster configuration.....but I am not so cabin space is valuable for the family.

Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
i would want some cabin to change in to keep coolers and things that i may need on a long day at the lake

All kidding aside, I would finish it. |
Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
Maybe the old 1/4 cabin? However I am thinking that if I got that far I may as well just go the rest of the way..... But damn it is a close race. A dead heat really as I put in a vote to keep it just so that I could see the results so right now that one vote difference is really a dead heat.

FROTFLMFAO!!!!! GLH, I owe you a drink of choice in Annapolis for that one!!!! :D :drink: Jon, I would a least finish it "Sparsley" at least you can get out of the weather and keep all your stuff there. Make it flat and throw some cushions in there for phornication purposes :D |
Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
Use a match to finish the boat. :D :D

Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
Jon,
I would finish it but very minimal. Remove the fridge, head ,sink etc....... Put 2 light weight facing lounges int it and possibly the V-berth (How much could a upholstered piece of foam weigh) These additions would be very minimal to additional weight but very functional as well. just my .02 |
Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
Go for the 1/4 cabin....

Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
i'm actually surpsised how few people use their cabins. i stay on my boat just about every weekend and its only a 26 footer but is very well layed out and roomy for a boat this size. have no problem doing 2 or even 3 days on it. i will say this though if you re-do it leave out the sink and fridge an stuff like that. i never used any of that stuff so out it went to free up some room.

Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
I use my cabin too.
hi Dave.... come look at my boat? |
Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
Empty cabins don't break, don't need a lot of maintenance, and store the PFD,s and anchor just fine.

Bed, Head and Cooking thingy = Second home tax write-off

Hey Audio, Why not build a inner liner cabin and do limited upholstery. That's what we did with the 29 Extreme. You can always doll it up later but the inner linner is light, easy to clean, and waterproof. Heres a pic of the 29's cabin unfinished. Dave

I can't go in the cabin, or I'll be hanging over the side talking to Captain O'Roake, trying to buy a Buick.

Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
I like Wardy's idea.... clean it up, then make some cusions later if you like.

Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
For family I would finish. If that is not a concern I would at least finish it lightly. I am in the process of finishing my cabin as the previous owner removed everything including the wall to wall shag. I plan to remove the adhesive residue from the fiberglass and sand then paint with a epoxy paint to at least leave it clean. I have the v cushions and will throw them in. The least amount of crap to break the better.

If you were a single guy you would want a cabin so you could trick little honeys into the cabin with "special" beads. :drink: Cordell |
Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
Well as has been stated the boat project has been going a little shall we say SLOW!!! I think that I will put in the stringers with the thought that I will put it back together again that way if next winter I decide that I do not like it with out the cabin I can always put it back together again.....

Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
If it were meeeeeee.........
I would make a simple fully enclosed head (had it on the Donzi, miss it badly on the Fountain...great when rafting up) I would make a HUUUUGE V berth....again simple but BIG....someplace you can really stretch out...... And a simple facing lounge .......for changing....etc I find alot of cabins try to do too much (cook, wash dishes, bathroom, sleep, storage) but dont do a really good job at any of them.....figure out what you need it to do and make it do a good job at it.......doug |

Here's what the cabin of a 302 originally looks like. The door on the right is an enclosed head.

I hope you guys think REAL fast.. :( :( :(

Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
The boat without a cabin will require less trim on the drive to raise the bow. The more weight you have toward the front of the boat, the harder to trim. You should notice a big difference in speed.

Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
Less maint., less things to break, less weight up front, more storage for tools, lines, fenders, and stuff. The only thing to consider is how many babes do you take out? I'm assuming you take out so many babes that you have less time to work on the boat. I'm guessing that's why everyone is teasing you about you restoration to boating ratio.
If that's the case you should leave the head in tack, so they can pee. Of course, I used to make my wife pee on the swim platform of my first boat and wash it off with sea water. :D Ok, lose the head too! Hey GLH, which Sunseeker did you look at down at Goosebay? Was it Kort Randalls? Are ya gunna buy it? |
Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
Oh yeah, if you don't finish it then you will have more money for gas and condoms! Who needs a cabin when you have a sunpad! :drink:
|
Re: Cabin or No cabin, you help me decide
Jon I voted don't finish it -but something light and minimal (and hopefully less expensive) could give you a better indication if you want to trick it out later on. But who am I to talk? I'm still waiting (Saturday it leaves FLA they tell me) for my damn arch to show up so we can put the stereo in.
