What do you think of this boat?

Just window shopping - but I like this!!!! :D

http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/5/8/74695758.htm

Only a couple of things look funny. What's with the way the glass just below the rail at the bow hooks out to the bow?? - kinda strange looking line on the hull.

I like the way in pic 2 the bolsters drop out to the gunwales instead of backward. Any opinions on that? seems like it would support better in the rough and hold you in from side to side.

Price doesn't even seem outrageous.
Could use a little updating, but I like it! :D

Re: What do you think of this boat?

awesome boats for sure but i believe they handle better with small blocks. i think that is the same hull as the sport magnum and they don't have the freeboard or the beam to handle the heavier big blocks. nice boat for running the great lakes . . . .oh . . . forgot your not on the great lakes :D :D :D.

one other thing about that boat. if it has been converted to brovos there may be a weight trade off from the TRS drive and transmission to offset the heavier motors.

The only thing that scares me is that with a boat that old I wonder how it is on the insides. Is there a way you can x-ray a boat for stress internally ?

With a tack hamer. Lightly tap all over and listen for hollow spots.

I'm just scared to buy a performance boat that old and then expect it to hold up after 20- 25 years of lets face it rough riding :D

Re: What do you think of this boat?

seems a bit over priced...especially with TRS drives...and the big blocks are gonna really make the boat stern heavy. look for stress cracks around the front of the faring, around the engine hatch and along the center rail on the bow. unless the crack are substantial, you should be in good shape...and obviously you'll want to check the transom and stingers for moisture and cracks...you can climb through these boats pretty good and see most all of the trouble spots...

Age realy isnt as much a factor as other issues ..the biggest nono ive seen is improperly sealed screw holes etc.. Anytime you cut into the core it should be sealed as well as possible ..The transom seems to be the first place to look..Bigger exhaust cutouts , trim tabs etc .. If water can get in , it will !
The plastic hammer is the best way.. And even if it sounds solid a moisture meter is a good second step ..

If you are looking for a nice boat in that price range, you might try looking for an older 30' Scarab. The ones from the late 70s and early 80s where built pretty good. Nice ride and a decent cabin. I had one for a few years and was very happy with it.

Don't be scared of those old boats :D ... my 1970 Donzi's hull integrity is incredible! Solid as a rock, no rattles or squeeks after 34 years. The 70's & early 80's era Cigs & Donzi's were very well built, and should last almost forever if properly maintained.

You beat me to it. Is that a pencil or pen between the big and second toe?

Re: What do you think of this boat?

As long as the stringers and transom are solid I wouldn't worry about the age. It does seem a bit pricy though doesn't it?

I have an '85 28ss and I love it. Small blocks with TRS drives. It eats up 2 ft chop like its not even there. Not only are big blocks heavier but theres not much room under the hatch to work on them. It's pretty tight even with small blocks. Honestly it is an absolute pain in the azz to work on. I'm going to update mine soon with 2 brand new motors, exhaust, interior, still on the fence about the bravos. The hook in the bow your talking about seems to show up in pictures more than in person. Heres a picture of mine. By the way, anyone thinking "Hey, that's not really a Top Gun!" Just remember my boat was built in '85. Cigarette didn't come out with the Top Gun until '87.

I recently bought a 1976 28SS with an OS windshield. Small blocks and TRS's. So far I love it. Heavy build and very solid ride. I don't think I'd like big blocks in that size of a boat though.

Re: What do you think of this boat?

JohnJan - you're boat looks awesome
:D :D
what do you have for power/drives/Props? - I'm not shopping yet, (the wallet isn't heavy enough) but that is about what I want to get into.
What kind of numbers are you getting?
I'm not looking to be the fastest guy out there, (low 70's would be about the most I wanna go, yet) but the good ride in the chop is what I want - I had a 25 Baja '86 with a 454, heavy boat, but damn could it handle snotty lake Erie. On a good day it was running mid to low 60's - which was (almost) enough fun for me.
I'd love to run faster, but I know my limitations right now - I'll throttle, let someone else steer...

Hey Reed,

Gave her the big heave ho last week. Right after I got the 2500 bucks back that she borrowed from me!

She was a good hearted girl and smart but...same old story. She lived in 90210 and drove a brand new MB. I thought, cool, a self sufficient one. Turns out she had no real job, no savings, owed her dad $4K, credit card debt, etc. She sure didn't mind spending my money though. Deffinately the old champaigne taste on a beer budget. Is there a friggin' woman is So Cal that isn't in debt and has a job?!? :(

Deffinately cool but way too much $$$. Hell, I'll sell ya my whole car for $30K! It's a real steel '32, 2&1/2 inch chop, built 350, Weiand Dragstar intake w/6 Holley 94's 2 barrels, Chet Herburt 903 roller cam, Crane roller rockers, Sanderson Limefire chrome megaphone headers, T5 trans, chromed beam ax 4 bar front end, real magnesium Halibrands, wide whites, Deuce Frame Company frame, etc, etc.

You buy that Dearborn Deuce body (for $22.5K!) and you still need a frame, running gear, suspension, wheels, tires, rear end, front ax, etc, etc. You end up with another $20K to $30K just in parts. It's fine if you got a ton of $ to spend but even though it's steel, it's still not a real '32 Ford! (although it's still cheap compared to this boating thing! :D )
