22 Pachanga, how fast?
We have an old 1986 22 Pachanga and we love it so much.
They have got to be one of the coolest little speedboats ever produced. Ours has the orig. 350 Magnum. How much power can the hull handle, set up properly. |
Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
Owned an 88' with a 454... GREAT boat! I always wished I kept it... it only had 115 hours in 1998. I would think a 500 or 525 EFI would make her hit close to 70. I think you could max out at about 750hp and not get too sideways.
|
Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
I think a 500 would get your boat well over 70 Kurt. Hell, it does 60 with the stock 350 mag (I got a GPS 54 mph out of it on a terrible day, into the wind, 1/2 tank of fuel, and 3 guys in it).
Fun boat too!! 'Foul |
Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
Yep The Pachanaga is and was a hot looking boat back in the days ,I wished they still made them ,Back in 80's they were up there in price 30,000 for a 22 or maybe it was a 24 anyway post a picture if you can.I always wanted one just didn't go for it bad enough, stuck with my Bayliner 24 Cobra offshore which had the 350 carbed/260 hp and the Bayliner would almost take it ,due to it was much lighter ,one thing my old boat would take the big waves and it was one of the sleekest Bayliner Cobra's built.

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
The 22' had an incredible (20'6") bottom. Fantastic handling boat. 500 hp will get you ~80 mph.

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
I'd be carefull putting a ton of power into one of those. I was looking at buying a 27' a few years ago, and my fiberglass repair guy told me that he used to do warranty repairs for Sea Ray back then. He said that some of those were not built well at all and had some serious issues / warranty claims. That's probably why they stopped making them. So if yours is ok, might be better left alone. However, the 22' may be different than the 27.

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
NOT. I've seen a ****load of them come thru my (friends) marina since the 80's. A long time large volume Sea Ray dealer who sold a lot of Pacs (and ran them himself). I have never ever seen one with structural issues of any kind. I had two myself...22' and a 27'. They had some constuction and layup features that were ahead of thier time. Not profitable enough (remember this is SeaRay were talking about) is why they went away. Truly a gentelman's sportboat much in the same vien as Formula SR's of the time. They were done quite well and attractive. The 27' rode softer than the 32' and was a big 27' with an excellent cabin, both in terms of layout and styling. Those high back rounded bolsters with the stand-off headrests were awesome looking and comfortable. The 27' with SB mags was an excellent package. The 22' was just about the most fun boat I ever had. A little tail heavy with 454/Bravo...but man did that thing handle like a slot car. You could tuck the trim in and come around as hard as you wanted at speed and that boat refused to bobble, slide, or misbehave in any way. dig in so hard it'd pitch you right out if you didn't have a GOOD grip. I landed mine so hard a couple of times it stalled. My buddy did an oops and landed his (twin turbo small block) 22' so hard it drove the engine mount ears and bottom nuts to the bottom of the threaded mount posts. I still see both our old 22's (and many more, including 27's) every summer. Still in one piece 15 years later!!! Stress cracks are not even that common. There were none in my two when I sold them.
The warranty claims for blistering were common (for much of the industry I might add) at the time, some had gelcoat blistering, some didn't. DON'T CONFUSE THIS WITH STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY! |
Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
Kurt, what shape is the existing engine package in now??

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
I met a guy on a poker run this summer that had a vortech charged 502efi in one. I looked over to my right at 80 and he was right there beside me. Says he runs 82 to 84 load dependant. Nice sleeper package.

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
I have an '88 22' Pachanga in my shop right now that is flawless--not a sign of a stress crack anywhere. This boat is a 454-Alpha , but I have not run it. I also have 2 late 80's 32 footers in the shop that IVAN mistreated.....Rick

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
I know of one locally that has a procharged 502 in it running over 80 :)
Thing is scary when all you see is the drive in the water. Nice boats, but honestly size does matter when running speeds like this. He had to add on tabs to overcome the extra weight in the back. |
Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
Since Kurt hasn't answered, and I have about an hour of driving time in his boat a month or so ago (thanks Kurt!!) I'd say the drive line in his boat is in great condition. The boat has an Alpha SS on it... I'd still be leary of putting a LOT of hp in front of that drive.
Biggus, care to add to that?? 'Foul |

I have a 1989 SeaRay 260 (27.6" LOA) with a 454 Merc & Bravo 1 that does a solid 46mph. According to what I've seen and heard, it has the same hull design and construction as the same size Pachanga. Any truth in that?

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
I forgot to mention that the boat has 790 hours on the original motor/drive.
BTW, this site rocks! |

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
the 260 OVand 260 cuddy were the same bottom, tho not the 27 Pac bottom. the Pac had another set of strakes and I believe another degree or two of deadrise.
How about a 260 Overnighter with a twin turbo BB running low 70's... :D Don, an older guy, loved the sleeper effect. This was early 90's My 27 stock ran 59 mph @ 4900 with a single 454 Mag. Ran low 70's with a supercharged Mag. I put that engine in a 26 Thoroughbred and picked up 15 MPH !! I still miss my 22' I've got a ton of pics of Pacs. I'll have to scan 'em |

Thanks! |
Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
I believe it was a labbed 19 or 21 Mirage (it was more than ten years ago :p ). Stock Mags are right on the power @ 4900/5000

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
I just sold mine and had a 620HP EFI built from Arizona Speed injection which is similiar to the HP500efi injection. It was an excellent runner and would easily do into the high 80's and we were still dialing it in when someone decided that they wanted it but with the stock power. Even with the old stock 330hp 454 it would do 62 gps.
|
Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
Thank God someone else said it first.... mine did 62 tops as well.... Alpina... was that GPS in the high 80s? That is amazing. I didnt think it would get there! Great Boat, way ahead of it's time.... it faded away just like the old Four Winns Liberator series. The Pachanga was heavy though if I remember correctly. It must be a hairy ride at 85?
|
Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
The Pacs were much more nicely done than the Liberator. Looked at both at the time. My '89 330/Bravo 22' would run a real 65mph on a 25" mirage.

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
Thanks for the replies guys. Our boat currently has a stock 350 Magnum. I've tried many props and found it to run the best with a 23 Lazer II @4900 rpm. Most of the time it's just me or one other person on board.
A buddy has a 170 hr 1997 454 Mag available for a good deal Waterfoul, last spring I took the Alpha SS drive off and put a std 1.50 Alpha in it's place. They must have a pretty high stock X dimention because it runs faster with the longer drive. Pachangalpina, how did it handle at 80+??? Kurt |
Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
Kurt~ I had an '87 w/ the 350 Mag in it, swapped the stock cleaver for a Turbo 1 and it ran MUCH better, used to see about 60 in the right conditions. I was young when I got it (brand new - thanks Dad! :D ) it ran great, (and I ran it hard on Lake Winni) up until it was stolen - yes stolen - never had a problem with it, except... The last summer I had it (1991), the transom right above the assembly on the inside started to show a crack, not sure if it was superficial or if it was deeper. I left it at the marina that fall to have it looked at and winterized and someone decided they wanted it more. So, they hooked up to it and drove off, (recovered many months later in NJ., yada-yada). But it was stable as hell and could have stood more power for sure! Good luck with it, I loved that little boat :D

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
At 80+ it was definately a two hander and 110% attention. I had a single ram imco external steering but would have been better with the full hyd. When I sold it we were still playing with different props and found that the cleaver style worked the best, but felt that we need just a bit more to get the boat smoothed out. I decided that was more than I needed in this boat for the water conditions by me and decided to save that motor to match up with another to go in my Fountain. My wife enjoyed that boat during the week but on the weekends we got beat-up and decided the Fountian could handle anything on our lake. The Pachanga was a rocket and I miss it already.

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
I have an 89 with a new Imco Bravo and Imco single ram steering, it runs 66 mph on GPS with a 330 ( it has a intake and carb..... that I doubt do a thing ). I am waiting for the new engine, an aluminum head 502 that I will add Imco powerflow exhaust to. I am hopeing for 80+ mph, the motor should make about 530hp.
I know of an 88 with an Merc HP 465 that runs 77-78 mph, it has a Land and Sea stern jack...... an addition mine will never see. I worked for sea ray for 5 years...... at the end of Pachanga time till 95... no problems. We had one with a 454 Mag and a B&M 174 Blower, it ran 88 mph. They are easy to drive at speed. ( I am used to Allisons and STV's though ). ........ I wanna see some pictures of these so postem. RT |

This is all I have for now. I will see if I can find some more.

Re: 22 Pachanga, how fast?
Used to be one on my lake that ran in the 90's. The ultimate sleeper. Many people
were humbled by the little sea ray. Couldn't tell until you noticed the vinyl covered hump in the engine cover. JC |
