Im looking for everything needed to service speedmaster 3a's
Not for me,but for my engine builder-"Race Shop Steve" |
Re: 3a's-tools/manuals
I have a workshop manual for #3's... the only real "specialty" tool you need is the special socket to remove the nose cone. The drive can be disassembled and set up using off the shelf tools. There are some specialty tools that make it easier.. But I did mine with regular tools. I made the socket to remove the cone. I'd be happy to loan the tool and manual for a one time basis... but I don't want them to go away forever.

What are you trying to do? reseal the lower? Completely disassemble?

Reed,
I was hoping to disassemble both drives and check everything. Thanks,Rob |

Re: 3a's-tools/manuals
You can easily inspect the top gears by removing the cover.

Re: 3a's-tools/manuals
We had a hard time trying to find anyone who had the tools forsale for 3a drives. My drive mechanic that works for me made all the tools himself(he's also a machinist) . Mercury didn't have any in stock and would not do a run of tools until they had ten orders.
Besides they wanted a rediculous amount of money for them. Tom |

This is what I believe is the most difficult thing about getting them apart. But I doubt you need this apart.

I knew someone would remember where they came from...... by the way thanks a lot we pulled the drive, had powersteering pump and starter rebuilt, fixed power steering cylinder "air" problems and stabbed the drive. Started saturday morning really early, took a break around 11 and went to watch poker run leave, and had it together by 4 to catch up with the poker run on their way back in. Ernie |
Re: 3a's-tools/manuals
i have a freind that builds 3a,s for the goverment every day. he told me last week that mercury has or will stop making 3a,s & 5,s any day. he also told me that mercury had a bad run of upper gears that took him one drive (while building could not get clearences to come in) to find and took mercury several blown up drives to find. call mercury and they will replace certin date code sets. my buddy has built at least 1000 3a,s and if you want it done better than mercury he is the man. let me know i will get you in touch with him.
