Re: anyone have experiance running surface drives on single engine V bottoms??
I was VP/GM of a marine distributorship (Palmer Power Co) and one of the brands we distributed was Borg Warner.
I built the first 19' Youngblood (maybe only) with a single BorgWarner/Arneson and a small block Chev. This was the pre-tunnel gull-wing Youngblood (originally set up with a jet drive). It ran and handled beautifully. Howard Arneson may not remember the boat, but he was quite impressed (at the time) when we discussed it.
The engine was a stock 350" LS-1, except for cam, headers, intake and carb: so was "maybe" 375 hp. The boat ran over 90 mph; with a 100 hp shot of nitrous it ran about 105. It was quite a surprise to the big block jets of the day.
After I sold the boat, a subsequent owner installed a large big block and ran the boat in Bracket racing drags. It ran the quarter in the 10's at over 120.
This was in the early 80's.
If you want photos, I'll look for them this weekend.

Get with Rick Turmel, of Stainless Marine Phantom racing fame. He knows quite a bit about making a single engine surface drive boat perform. Ed

I run an Arneson #6 and a big block on my boat and I love it!!! Lots of fun to drive and you can see me coming from anywhere on the lake.

George Desmond "Geo" had a small Donzi running crazy numbers w/ a surface drive. Im not sure weather the drive or the excess HP got the numbers up though

I was thinking a 30' phantom with about 1100hp and a surface drive would be a hot set up for me.

that boat in pic#2 is one great boat check it out if you havn't seen it.
i have a ADS # 6 on a 19' donzi style boat. aprox 400 hrs on it and the only problem i have ever had has a rope raped around the shaft and pulled the seal out, $5.00 repair. boat runs a little flater then with the merc drive but handle ruff water great.
i love mine!!
ps: my wife hates that boat
