Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
Black Cloud... I don't think it runs 145 but it's pretty fast, that's for sure. I think it's two brothers who know their way around the bilge and last I heard is that they were building a 444 with a pair of 1500+ monster motors and Arnesons. I actually saw the 444 hull which was intended for them and it had no drives or motors. They were going to rig her themselves. I was told that Hustler normally do not sell boats that were not rigged inhouse (you can bring your own motors for rigging though) but I was also told that these guys are a bit special and that they know what they're doing. Anybody knows what became of that 444?

Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
I recognized the boat as soon as I saw the air cleaners. I've got a bunch of pictures of it. It had 598's with huffers at the time. I lost track of it two years ago when it was listed with Aqua-Mania in Alex Bay,NY. Yup, two brothers. Had monster guages on both sides of the dash. Co pilot got to stare at those big thermocouple guages for the first sign of trouble.
|
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
I saw the dash of that 444 that was being built for them. That dash was one of the most beautiful things I've seen on a boat. Everything that can possibly be monitored was on that dash, inc. engine knock... Hustler had to make cutouts on guage frames to make them fit all, that's how many they had. If I remember correctly, they were burgundy red monster guages with carbon dials on glossy carbon dashboard. Fantastic...

Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
That Boat Got Sold
It Did Not Do 145 But It Did Do 143 Before The One Trans Locked Up It Did Have The Fastest V Bottom Speed At That Time - Unofficial Of Course I Have The 32 That It Replaced They Do Some Special "things"for Them At The Plant On Their Boats As Can Be Told By What I Have They Have Some Very Nice Stuff In Them Haven't Seen Any Pics Of The 444 At All Cb |
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
they build their own motors and do it themselves
they just get the hull and basics they are "special" |
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
WOW 143  I seen it befiore listed in old ads hanging out on the internet
|
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
Well at least I have a goal now  :D
Can you imagine what it took to increase a stock 388 that runs about 85 to make it go 143, Thats 50 something MPH . Thats more than just horse power :D |
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
a regular 388 was never designed to do those #'s
again being " special " the bottom was done to handle that power because they set out to do the record speed back then just imagine a tranny locking up at 140 + as i was told - good thing they knew how to run a boat |
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
it was around for a while
388 's tend to linger a while but when they first came out they were hot !! |

Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
yup
and he didn't roll it ! |
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
ouch  Where they ok and did it hurt the boat??
|
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
It Didn't Roll
|
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
sorry ,I dont read to good  :D
|
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
They had 598s in the 38 that made about 1320hp.They dynoed the motors on 3 different occassions at Zuls. They built 714s for the 44 that made around the same power with an a s s h o l e full of torque. The 44 turned out to be a bomb.
|
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
Yea...pictures are Strip's forte'. :D
|
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph

JCPERF question for ya . Why don't people build the 632ci like all the drag guys do??I thought that was a good combo. Why? Rob |
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
They work good with pontiac style heads. They dont work good with chevy style heads.Reason being you need a big head with all that piston speed.A 598 is probably the best all around combination.Motors with more bore than stroke make good power and run good.
|
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
What about the dart big M's?
So the 632combo must be square? |
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
632s are over square 4.75 stroke,4.6 bore. They make good torque but fall off up top.We tried the 410 big m heads and they are good but not as good as the big chief. The new 18 degree dart chevy heads make about 40hp more than a dart chevy pro 1 heads and the big chief make about 80hp more than the pro 1 heads

Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
i have blackcloud here in upstate ny it is owned by a doc in syracuse it is a very fast V bottom... we had monster engines built by nitrous john gossen who was killed on his way to meet us in the thousand islands poker run he was in a new 05 american offshore 2600 that stuffed ......very tragic ordeal........blackcloud has one engine turning backwards everything is mirrored as in opposite even the 14-71 blower is turning reverse ....msd is up front in between the blower belt (soon to be moved to the back of engine when we finish the offset dist drive) trannys are 1550 dry sump hubers that Do work it is one bad ride!

Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
Big Sal on LI built the original engines.

Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
Hey Strip--About the Hustler 50 at Cumberland Marine, I'm 99.9% sure that that boat was owned by the original owner of my Slingshot. The 50 had triple 1350 Sterlings with Sixes. It was there on consignment. Don't know if the name was removed, but it was called 'Cosmic Voyager'! I'm looking at the 12/11/02 Cumberland sheet- over a million new, asking $680. His new boat is the 42' Outer Limits with twin 1500hp Sterlings that has 2 hours on it that I was telling you about that I'm parked next to for the winter in heated storage. Lou

Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
the hustler 50 was custom ordered by mark r. who was also racing with rick merola (Aquamania)a skater 40 with sterling1350s .....TEAM SCREAM u can see the boat at the worlds in key west take thee best flight out of the water with a perfect landing.......a 10 ! the video is on freeze frames main page play the sample clip ..... and they walked away its very cool ! the 50 had many teething problems when new

Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
Boostbros is right although I thought the Skater was a little longer, but I'm sure he's correct. Mark's a private guy so I've never mentioned his name in the number of times I've referred to him on this site. The 50 was supposedly for his wife. He had a 40 Hustler, bought the Skater. Bought my Slingshot and decided to sell it a month later according to the Team Scream website. By the way, a Hydro-Hoist for a 50 with triples is a sight to see. His new 42 OL is just beautiful. The 50 was rerigged. Not sure they ever got it the way they wanted. Not surprisingly, it didn't have switchable mufflers and Mark had a nasty habit of motoring in in the middle of the night. The folks in the gated community above the Newport Marina wanted to shoot him. Oh well....

Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
was the 444 a BOMB or DA BOMB ?
never really heard anythning on it at all are you referring to the all white 50 that was around ? if it is , i was at the factory years ago when they were building it and it was to have turbines in it but there was some "computer issues " and they decided to go with big motors instead - did it become Spiderman ? can't forget a boat like that with the green accents |
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
Mark's 50 was a year 2000. He planned on having it painted. So it was all white with 'Cosmic Voyager' on the sides way up front.

Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
after working on many drives including 6s the arneson ASD-8s
are impressive and massive inside ....input shaft and output are 2.5"........2.160" where the ball bearings press on ....bearing od is 4.75" there are two 7" long sprockets on the shafts that can be changed for underdrive to overdrive with many combos for shaft speed vs prop pitch and diameter.... it makes top fuel look easy ! there is a 7"wide silent chain looks like a giant cam chain connecting the two. arnesons like to turn in and the prop shaft should be about 2" out of the water at speed(unlike most boats u keep dropping the drives as you gain speed because the boat lifts out of the water) BUT u can drop the hammer at 3000 and hear 14-71s come to life and paste you back in the seat and know the drives will not break |

Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
the guy with the 388 and 444 is a BIG SUPPORTER of ASD ( i think they even sponsor him)
Hustler had 32's , and a few , went out with them on it mine was one of them and it was the one that the 388 replaced his theory is that they can handle alot of power and will not break if i had the $$$ to do a new boat and the boat would work with them i would do it Hustler seems to be one of a few that does it i was at they factory a while back and they were doing a 40 with diesels and a drive i've never seen before , I think they were the Weismann's. i don't know of too many others that build their product with ASD's except for yachts Most people are doing the 6's and they are big money, i don't know what the difference in $$ between the 2 are and i understand that manuverablity(spelling) around the docks is also better what boat are you looking at ? chris |

Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
ONE BAD AZZ BOAT.
I attempted to contact the "Black Cloud Boys" several times when I was setting up my 32. No luck! I ended up talking with Paul Fiore. Some of my questions Prop shaft centerline relative to bottom of hull? Distance between props toe in or out? Blade diameter and rake.? Trial and error is what it comes down too. |
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
Nortec has successfully powered some V-bottoms with ASDs. They might be a good source of info.
|
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
Rik at arneson can tell you the setup
|
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
Rik has hooked me up more then once!!
especially in the parts department. I owe him more then a drink or two. Didnt realize Nortec did some Arnesons. The more I look at this 388 in this post I,m wondering if they could go staggered and lower the Center of gravity. Is there room to stagger? Do they offer Staggered in the 388? |
Re: 388 Hustler 145+mph
Just talked to Terry, dropping my 4300 off around 1/3/05 and will be going out on a test ride on a 50 with Yans/Arnesons, looking forward to it, I will let you guys know what I think when I get back. Jeff
