Default To trim the Tabs or Drives to run level, but free??

I always run with my tabs fully up once on plain and then trim the drives out until the boat feels free. At this setup, usually ends up launching nose high, which means the landing angle exposes the boat bottom to a harder landing.

How do you know what to adjust to keep the boat from launching and to make it run and land level (which I think would make for a smoother ride), drop the tabs or the drives? What determines which one gets nudged a little?
Oh yeah, without loosing speed.

Have you made the mesurements on your tab indicator yet?? To show where your tabs are straght back from the hull. This basically extends the lenght of your boat, so to speak. Also, from what I've been told you shouldn't run the drive too far up and not all the way in either. Too far up and the gears are reaching and could chip...All the way in and you're mashing the gears= more wear on them. So I always run the drive(s) 'out a bit' and work with the tabs. Just my humble .02.

oh, and if you just super charge that thing you wont have to worry about running it so dry to get extra mph out of it!!!

I only have two settings that I ever place the tabs at:

1st setting: neutral; straight out, on a parallel plane with the bottom of the boat. I spend about 95% of time running here.
2nd setting: just down far enough that the trailing edge of the tab is even with the plane of the bottom of the boat coming off the transom just in front of the tab. This is just enough to take the any 'nose high' condition off the boat, and I set it here when teaching someone to drive, just so it does not give them scare. I spend about 5% of the time running here.

The only other place I put the tabs is all the way down when planing or coming off plane in a shallow area. This will keep the transom from dipping down too far.

Hope that helps. This is the same on my old 26' Sonic and now 37' AT.

Can't do that, gotta give everyone else a chance to keep up.

I know where my tab level point is,(don't have the numbers in front of me) All the way up is just a tad bit more as Fountain installs spacers on the trim cyl to limit their max out. When I say trim the drive out, I don't mean until I'm sportin a rooster. All the way in, and she plows.

#1. Do you mean neutral or all of the way up? I consider neutral to mean that the tab surface is parrallel to the bottom of the hull.

#2. Huh? Translate that for me!!!

I trim the drive all the way down to get on plane and also drop the tabs all the way. Once on plane I trim the drive and tabs neutral (parrallel with the bottom of the boat). From there it depends on the conditions. If its flat I will raise the drive and free the boat up, kind of depends on load though. If its choppy I drop the tabs a little and if thats not enough I will trim the drive to just below neutral. I have found my boat rides better in a chop with the drive neutral and the tabs dropped a little. If its rough enough to have to trim the drive in its going to be uncomfortable anyway so I try to keep the drive as neutral as I can to maintain a good thrust angle which keeps the boat level in flight.

Coming on plane ..drive tucked and tabs just above level with hull (if at all) Boat pops on plane in a heartbeat at 2800-3000rpm.

Running in glass.....Tabs up, drive at 4-5 (on the indicator)

Rough stuff and cruiser wakes drive at 3-4 and tabs just below hull.....flys level!!!

Neutral means parallel with the bottom of the boat; straight out. NOT all the way up. All the way up has them tilted up a bit on my boat.

When I say, just down a bit, I mean, extend a straight piece of steel or a yard-stick off the bottom of your boat, to the back of your trim tab. Then, bring the tab down til the trailing edge, touches that device you are checking the plane with. That's what I mean. Sorry, I did mis-type above, and I fixed it.

There was an article several years ago, which was called "How to run Fast". I don't remember the author (it was Bob Teague or Reggie, or someone along those lines), nor the publication, only what a good friend of mine quoted me from the article, and that is where I took heed.
