The US Coast Guard has discovered the underwater hazard that touched off last month's massive oil spill on the Delaware River.
Investigators say when that Greek tanker Athos I moved up the Delaware River more than a week and a half ago, it struck a 15-foot curved piece of pipe that breached the hull in two places.
The Coast Guard says the object was found about 700 feet away from the Citgo dock in the anchorage area.
Preliminary forensic tests of the paint on the pipe and paint on the vessel are a positive match.
The US Army Corps of Engineers had been using multiple sonar technologies to scour the 40-foot-deep channel to look for whatever object may have caused a six-foot gash in the bottom of the hull, as well as a two-foot puncture.
A survey team says GPS tracking of the tanker indicates that it passed over the object as its tug boats were moving it into place at the pier.
