OT: (Sort of) Credit Check Services

I want to check my credit, and monitor it. What is the best service for this? I plan to take a loan out for building my house in Maine and I want to know were I stand before I go to the banks.

Troutmaster that is the best advice you will ever give. Took me four plus years after my identify theft problem surfaced to resolve.

AOL offers free credit checks with Experian, and you can get all three plus a "notification alert" if anything changes for a small fee. I have it.

What he said. I would stay away from the all in ones. Not because of any personal experience I would just feel uncomfortable giving info to the all in ones. Each will give you one free credit check a year so take advantage of it.

www.freecreditreport.com is by Experian. Not sure about other states, but they have extended the free credit check that will become madatory (phased in over time by state) to Texas for the Month of December only.

You can get your report, but have to pay $5 if you want the score. You can also get the other 2 but you'll pay much more for them.

Here's one you can try for the first 30 days for free and it gives you info on all three agencies and scores. It even has a function to advise you on the "what if I did this" scenario's. I have used it and it's pretty good.

Nope. If you're checking your own report and score, it's considered a soft inquiry and won't show up on your report.

I set up the monitoring deal through Experian. It's under $10 a month and will let you know if anyone pulls your credit or anything pops up on your report. Pretty cheap piece of mind in this day and age.

I used www.myfico.com once and didn't have any problems with it.
