502 or 496 HO>>??

Thought I would take a poll now that the 496 has been around for a while. Is it an equal replacement to the 502? Better? Not as good?

Can anyone just answer the question?????????? Stop the phuc'in around...

I believe both are great after owning both.

502 stronger internals for supercharging and more suitable for upgrades.

496 smarter motor technology wise. Fewer upgrade options. Closed cooling and easy to winterize. More maintenance free.

I would say 496 has the edge if you leave it stock.

Re: 502 or 496 HO>>??

From what I see so far it is confirming my feelings that the 496 is not as durable as the 502's. It is a nice piece of high tech equipment but not a true replacement for it's predecessor which has more in common with the 525's we see out there than with the 496's.

Reggie always maintained that the 502's were bullett proof. We chatted about the 502's a while back and they were his favoriite platform at the time. I will have to ask him where he is at with HO's in a 35'er. It's getting time to start thinking spring. Sold the old boat. Boatless is a bad feeling.

I always thought the 502 was a great motor base, don't know why it was ever discontinued. 496 HO is a good motor now, they had issues with the first few runs, i know all this because I have had 2 others up until I got this newest one in June 04'

From what I hear offline anyone who stuck 496's in a new boat and had 502's previously are not as happy with them as they were with their 502's. If you never had 502's then you would not know or understand their position as well.

I guess 525's really have "taken the place" of 502's. Just means a bigger loan I suppose.

I really don't have anything to add to the thread, but I thought I'd just phuc around, even though I've been instructed not to.

Re: 502 or 496 HO>>??

I know for a fact that when my 502 was stock (before headers and blower) I could take the same 30' Kachina with a 496 ho out of hole and on top end. Especially out of the hole, I'd be on plane and excellerating while his bow was still up in the air trying to roll over.
If their horse power numbers are true then the torque must be substantially greater in the 502 mag. Not only that it looks better(in my opinion) than that plastic shroud.
My busness partner has a 496 ho in his 27 Fountain, and I dont dont know if its characteristic of them but his goes through oil. Not only does it leak it out the crankcase ventaltion but it must pump alot of it down the intake because he is constantly having to add oil and his bilge is always dirty.
His boat was faster than my 502 Kachina by about 3 or 4 miles an hour but once again I could eat him alive out of the hole, and in the midrange.
The Vortech blower and Headers took care of that though............ Nothing worse than having to work with some-one who kicks your ass on the lake and talks about it all week at work. If he upgrades his motor and regains the lead agian, I'll be out boat shopping the next day........

Yea..the boat I am getting is going to be a contender. I am thinking a 35' Ex with 525's.
It'll be a 90+ mph durable and reliable...not many can beat that where I boat.

I wish the 496's did't look so "plastic" as well...I have seen triple applications and then you look at 502's or 525's and it looks like you have HP engines..the look of the 496 makes me think runabout and not offshore...too bad..

I didn't want to pre-empt this poll by telling you my brother in law had a 496 that only lasted 140 hrs before needing lots of top engine work...but I feel the 496 is not nearly the engine the 502 was and look at the price...

Can I chime in? I had a 502 Mag EFI in my last boat. Went through three sets of manifolds and risers. Stock Merc stuff was crap. I have run HO's for the past three seasons with no poblems. Knock on wood!! :( Start better, idle better, eccelerate better, run better.......overall better IMHO.

Anyhow it would be a nice boat but the resale on it will not be a good as the twin step 35. The cockpit room differance and engine room access differance is very much greater with the 35 twin step plus the 35 twin step with 525's will see your goal of 90mph.

Thanks for the "heads up" I forgot the Ex is a single step...I have looked at so many boats this summer I can't keep it all straight. :D

I saw a good deal on an Ex with 496's and was thinkin about maybe going for it now in the winter.....adding blowers later..but it seems like that's not the way to go. Durability would eventually become an issue I think.

I've heard this before and always figured it was the fresh water cooling that eliminated the 502 Mag corrosion problems.

Tommy from Chief Engines always tells me: "There's no replacement for displacement."
He wouldn't even touch a 396 Chevelle engine for me 'cause it was too little! (Elitist little bas####!)

More cubes equal more torque...boats need torque...502 has more cubes.

Maybe mortgage the house and get Triple 525's on a 42X  (I think Lake Cumberland has it on hold for me.) :D :D Buy this and I can finally get free of being called a knob! :drink:

Re: 502 or 496 HO>>??

I too had 502's and replaced them with 496 HO's. I much prefer the HO's. They run so much smoother,no oil useage or corrosion problems. Better fuel economy. Performance is slighlty better than the 502's. It was the best decision I ever made. I learned with the 502's to get a diagnostic tool and it was one of the first things I did after motor installation. Carry it with me on any long trips.

Looks about like a dead heat. One thing to keep in mind, you can get a warranty on the 496's. :)

Ya, I've been watching this thread. I am about to buy a 496HO to replace a 454Mag MPI. 40 more ponies in a light boat should give me a few MPH.

When I have to replace my 454/420's, I'll probably be looking for some 496 HO's.
