Maybe Merc isn't really interested in selling that motor to the general public, but instead to the boat builders, something of the caliber of Baja, Formula... (I'm not comparing those two boat makers, but instead the way they market and sell there boats). I'm sure they are going to sell the motor ALOT cheaper to a builder.
Then the guy at the boat show is looking at a boat with a pair of those under the hatch thinking there's $128,000 in motors alone on this boat, this would allow a dealer to use this in a sales pitch of "what a great deal he's giving you".

The engines weren't blue, they weren't supercharged, they were all good parts (GM/Crower/JE/Crane/Mellings/Holley/Sen-Dure), 540 cubic inches, injected, freshwater cooled, came with full-length Stellings headers, a 1-year warranty and drives that will (and do) handle full-throttle starts.

For $20,000 less.
