Dry Storing a Stepped Hull: Is a stepped bunk required?
Will anything bad happen to a stepped hull if it is stored on a straight bunk? :( :( :(

this is why you should have gotten an ocean pounding resin bucket..... you could probably just leave them on the ground without hurting it.

Re: Dry Storing a Stepped Hull: Is a stepped bunk required?
My single stepped 05 Sunsation 288 came with an non stpped ACE trailer, the boat was sitting on the sharp edge of a perpindicular bunk,, I was pissed to say the least, the least they could have done was to put the bunks on a table saw and cut 24 degree angles on the bunks, but NO, they decided to cut the carpet down the middle and use a circular saw to HACK up my bunks half way through from both sides, on some ridiculous angles where the boat was barely touching any of the bunk, then re-stapled the carpet on the running surface with the saw dust still in between . I decided to take the bunks off and try to angle the brackets or put them on a table saw and cut the notch and angle,, the 3x10 was split right through the middle,, ended up lag and carriage bolting 2 2x12x10's together, cutting the 3/4 inch step and 24 degree angles on them,, re-covered them in carpet and they work awesome.. I tell you, I can't believe the HACK job some dealers out there do...

Re: Dry Storing a Stepped Hull: Is a stepped bunk required?
I know that it doesn't have stepped bunks, but if it is off the bunks and in the water at least once a month........is that okay? What is a "period of time"????
Steve.......what Myco lift? Don't you have to have a house/dock to take that? If it keeps raining here, maybe I should start thinking about that. :D :D :D |
Re: Dry Storing a Stepped Hull: Is a stepped bunk required?
I cant see how it could change the bottom shape ..the step is just a void above the bunk.. Where would the undue stress be applied ??

Now the secret is out of what make FOUNTAINS the fastest, safest handeling boats. :D |

the point at which the step creates the "edge" can not handle the full weight of the boat, if it does, it will hook or deform over time.... no good. |
Re: Dry Storing a Stepped Hull: Is a stepped bunk required?

Re: Dry Storing a Stepped Hull: Is a stepped bunk required?
Wasnt there a Teagues on tech answer in a recent Powerboat mag saying that the bottom would return to its original shape once properly supported on a correct stepped trailer?

Nort you should know better :D

Re: Dry Storing a Stepped Hull: Is a stepped bunk required?
Nort, I would have them mod your bunks. They can do it pretty easy by attaching some 2x4s to the aft of your bunks, with deep countersunk screws and carpeted of course. My first boat had the boat hanging off the back of the bunks of the trailer, which is not good either.

I used lumber and screwed together 3 piece in a l_l shape, turned it over and placed them on the rear section of the 2-bunks. The high and dry let me do this because I did not have to drill holes into there bunk so when I left there bunks were good as new.

Re: Dry Storing a Stepped Hull: Is a stepped bunk required?
There are many schools of thought on this subject as we have discussed it with boat builders and "experts in the industry". Everyone here so far has given good advice. If you care about the boat, follow their advice. I have seen boats that when you out a straight edge on them you can see light through the other side. The same boat also has funky water pressure on that motor. Glass returning to its shape once placed on a trailer, never heard one boat builder agree with that statement.

Re: Dry Storing a Stepped Hull: Is a stepped bunk required?
Ive seen a brand new 42 Fountain lose 4 MPH due to keeping it on a flat bunk lift.Even pulled the motors out and redynoed them thinking the motors were down on power.Turned out the bottom developed a 5/8 of an inch hook from not being supported right.

you can use gold medallions as shims on those fountains... works perfectly :D |

Re: Dry Storing a Stepped Hull: Is a stepped bunk required?
Also....remember to trim the drives up before storage so that the hull doesn't spin out or barrel roll during the winter.
T2x....... :p |
