GHOST RIDER To Be Shown at Newport Wooden Boat Show
The GHOST RIDER will be taken out of storage (these past 25 years) to appear at The Newport Wooden Boat Show, August 26, 27, 28, 2005 in Newport, R.I. The Newport Wooden Boat Show is sponsored by Wooden Boat Magazine of Brooklyn, Maine. The GHOST RIDER is the original one-off custom built ocean racing powerboat designed by the famous design team of Jim Wynne and Waltman Walters and the genesis of their later Formula, Donzi and Cigarette designs. In fact, GHOST RIDER is the only and last surviving wood offshore racing cruiser they built. The GHOST RIDER was built in 1964/1965 by Souter, Isle of Wight, U.K. and has been preserved in original form since its overall World Championship season. The GHOST RIDER was designed for rough water racing with a heavy extreme deep-vee wooden hull powered with twin 750 HP turbocharged Daytona inboard engines transmitting 1500 HP through super-sized vee-drives to keep the propellers under the boat to enhance rough water leaping and cruising capabilities in open seas. The GHOST RIDER had dominated stern drive boats in open rough water conditions. The GHOST RIDER raced undefeated in the United States and Europe dominating APBA (American Power Boat Association) and UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique) offshore racing in 1966. Thank you for taking care of such an important piece of history. That boat was the cutting edge of technology in offshore racing when it raced with Jim Wynne. I am looking forward to seeing it agan after so many years. Charlie McCarthy |

He started racing in 1966 out of K&K Outboard on Long Island, where I worked at the time....with a 16 flat bottomed Rayson Craft powered by twin Merc 110's. Roughest riding boat I ever drove. He also had a beautiful Sting Ray which come to think of it may have been the roughest riding car I ever drove.
To my knowledge Barry still has Ghost Rider, although the sightings in Newport could have been him taking a ride. T2x |

I just had to go back and re-visit this whole thread...... I gotta give a big thanks to all who have taken the time to get these old photos "digital" to share with the rest of us. It's awsome.....................more, more, ...........I'm addicted............

I believe Rocky Aoki from "Benihanna" fame got his start racing with you in a 28' Barcone, in "S" (Sport) Class. Do you have any pictures of this boat? I'd love to see them! Thanks, |
