Oh, the memories............

Post # 21 was the Cowes Torquay race in England for the Harmsworth trophy.

Post # 22 Rolex watches were such great bargains then. I won a race in Gloucester Mass and the first place prize money was $650. I bought a stainless steel Submariner with it. Later I bought a Gold Submariner with the blue face for $4,100.
Those watches, gold with blue faces, were very rare, and the reason was that the Shah of Iran gave them away as gifts. He had a deal with Rolex that they wouldn't make any for general distribution.
Willy Meyers made a Cigarette for the Shah and delivered it to Iran and came back with one of the watches. On the back was engraved HRH Reza Pahlavi (Spelling?)........anyway, after the Shah was overthrown, the watches were released and a bunch of us bought them. I had one, and I know Joel Halpern had one.

Post #24 that Heatbuzz posted of my old boats show them at the following race locations, top to bottom:
Benihana, New Jersey
Key West
Bacardi, Miami

Freeport Long Island
Boat construction, Hollywood Fla.
Newport Beach, Calif

Newport Beach
Fort Lauderdale
Benihana, New Jersey as Rums of Puerto Rico

Post # 31....some of the other race sites that we went to were: San Francisco, Newport Beach, Long beach on the West Coast.
St Petersburg, Key West, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Bahamas, Long Island, New Jersey, Cape Cod, Plymouth and Gloucester Mass on the East Coast and the various Great Lakes sites, Detroit, Ohio by the amusement park.

Post #37 Bill Gazell in a 30 foot Sutphen, this is the boat that replaced his 28 foot Cigarette....he was very successful with this new boat.

Post #42 yes, that was the California race. Don had two of these 28 foot Magnums in Europe, one was with a single sterndrive and the other was multiple outboards. Depending on the water conditions he would choose which one to race that day. Also #4 was his lucky number so you will notice he used that a lot or a variation of it like #16. The other boat #70 was a turbine powered boat driven by Odell Lewis and owned by Carl Kiekhaefer, it was banned from competition.

Post #68 looks like the '77 race out of Key West where Betty became World Champ in a very rough race. She cut her lip wide open on the dash and raced with a cloth in her teeth to stop the bleeding. Those men were so kind to her, as you can see they really babied her.
Betty raced in the exact same water that we all did, she asked for no quarter and was given none, she was a great driver, man or woman.

Great thread, thanks for the memories.
