GHOST RIDER To Be Shown at Newport Wooden Boat Show
The GHOST RIDER will be taken out of storage (these past 25 years) to appear at The Newport Wooden Boat Show, August 26, 27, 28, 2005 in Newport, R.I. The Newport Wooden Boat Show is sponsored by Wooden Boat Magazine of Brooklyn, Maine. The GHOST RIDER is the original one-off custom built ocean racing powerboat designed by the famous design team of Jim Wynne and Waltman Walters and the genesis of their later Formula, Donzi and Cigarette designs. In fact, GHOST RIDER is the only and last surviving wood offshore racing cruiser they built. The GHOST RIDER was built in 1964/1965 by Souter, Isle of Wight, U.K. and has been preserved in original form since its overall World Championship season. The GHOST RIDER was designed for rough water racing with a heavy extreme deep-vee wooden hull powered with twin 750 HP turbocharged Daytona inboard engines transmitting 1500 HP through super-sized vee-drives to keep the propellers under the boat to enhance rough water leaping and cruising capabilities in open seas. The GHOST RIDER had dominated stern drive boats in open rough water conditions. The GHOST RIDER raced undefeated in the United States and Europe dominating APBA (American Power Boat Association) and UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique) offshore racing in 1966. The GHOST RIDER was 1966 Overall winner of London Daily Express Cowes-Torquay Race. Look forward to seeing friends and aficionados of vintage powerboats and offshore racing ... "back in the dayss". Seeya there.... Barry |

Barry
Thank you for taking care of such an important piece of history. That boat was the cutting edge of technology in offshore racing when it raced with Jim Wynne. I am looking forward to seeing it agan after so many years. Charlie McCarthy |

To my knowledge Barry still has Ghost Rider, although the sightings in Newport could have been him taking a ride. T2x |

Re: back in the dayss
Ghost Rider, welcome to "OSO"!
I believe Rocky Aoki from "Benihanna" fame got his start racing with you in a 28' Barcone, in "S" (Sport) Class. Do you have any pictures of this boat? I'd love to see them! Thanks, |
Re: back in the dayss
See post #249 for more information on Ghost Rider's power and v drive set-up.

Re: back in the dayss
Okay, I got no response in General Discussion about this . . . so maybe it'll yield something here :drink:
What about a 26' Corsa named Johnny Red? Still around? Anyone have pics from then or now? Know anything about it? How about the 30' Image cat named Mad Mac? Or any of the other "circuit" boats from the 1980's and 1990's that were based in the Northeast? All of the Florida boats seem to be here already! Who has pictures from those days??? :D And most importantly, what ever happened to the original 32' Carys all named "The Cigarette" and used by Don Aronow in 1969 and 1970? Where did it go after Arnold Glass bought it? WHERE ARE ALL THE OLD RACEBOATS?!?!? :evilb: Maybe this will get it going again! |

DONZ JR MIKE OK, I'm lost....is that white "powder" or "power"........... Not sure what white power's got to do with boating, but white powder makes some sense........... |
Re: back in the dayss
White power, blue power. Almost all the boats in the previous dozon or so pages have Merc power. I always swam upstream, using Holman and Moody Fords. In many races, I was the only non-Merc. Still won my share.

Thought the new British members of OSO would like seeing these old shots and hearing the old stories.
Nigel and Jon feel free to jump right in. |

Scorpio's Sex Machine looks like a 26' or a 30' Corsa, am I right? I just bought a 26' Corsa and that photo gave me the motivation to finish it! :evilb:

Re: back in the dayss
Now I'm post whoring . . .
A request: Does anyone have photos of the original "Still Crazy," the blue/white/red 1983 30' Velocity that preceded the 38' Cougar Catamaran of the same name that stuffed in Key West killing driver Dick Fullam and throttleman Mike Poppa? I almost purchased that hull (30' Velocity) as a project and was always curious to see what it looked like running. The only picture I could find was an aerial shot at the Key West race in '83 of the boat docked at the Galleon Resort. H |
