St. Johns River

Anyone ever spend any time on the St. Johns boating? Cuda you live over there now right? Thoughts? I found a little resort by Deland with a dock and wonder if it would be fun place to trailer boat over and cruise around? Whats the river like? The place rents houseboats so I assume it is deep enough at least. Any places to stop for lunch etc? Is the river cool or would we be bored silly. We goto Captive a couple times a year and just cruise around and eat at Cabbage Key and always have a great time, just looking for another spot to add to the mix.

Make sure you go to the Outback Crabshack to eat. It is right off the St. John's up 6-mile creek and has 1/4 mile of floating docks.

The food is AWESOME...it also happens to be my cousins place :drink:

St Augustine is quite a ways from the river. Does that creek go that far?

Cuda, the name is Hontoon Landing and from the map on the website the resort/marine is prety close to Deland. Is there any section of the river that is cooler to see? Where is 6 mile creek?

The address is:

Outback Crabshack
8155 County Road 13 North
St. Augustine, FL 32092
Tel: (904) 522-0500

The food network actually did a piece on them. They catch their crabs fresh daily. It is also the lunch stop for the Jacksonville Firefighters poker run.

Here is a link to their website. I didn't know it was back up until I just checked.

Come see us by boat or air:
Sixmile creek is deep in Palmo Cove on an approximate heading of 100 degrees from Red Flash 22 (refer to your chart to avoid shoaling at entrance to cove). We have a massive 1500 ft. floating dock with over 15 ft. of dockside draft.

I'm very familiar where Hontoon is. It's about six miles from my house by car, and probably four by boat from the park near my house. The water is plenty deep all down the river. From Hontoon, it's maybe 20 miles north to Astor, and from Astor, it's about five miles to Lake George, which has Silver Glen, a major boat gathering spot in the summer. Sanford is about 15 miles south of Hontoon. There isn't much of anything but beautiful river between Deland and Astor, most of it runs through the Ocala National Forest.

What are you looking to do, bring a boat, or rent a pontoon or houseboat? How many days?

It's directly across the river from Hontoon Island State Park. They have docking and cabins at Hontoon.

I was thinking about bringing our boat (20ft bowrider) and staying like 3 days ish to try it out. Just a quickie long weekend type getaway. Sounds like it would be a different interesting change from the boating we typically do. This is a silly question and I have not looked at the GPS, but is the river easy to navigate?

Yes, the river is well marked all the way to Jacksonville.

What you might want to do, is stay at Astor. From there, you can go north to Silver Glen one day, then run south to Deland the next day. One place on the river there that has rooms, a restaurant, a bar, and docks is Blair's Jungle Den. On Saturdays and Sundays, they have $1 Bloody Marys and $1 big ass burgers! The first time I stopped there, my buddy and I both had burgers, I had a coke, and he had two Captain and cokes, and our bill was $11.79! You're not going to beat that anywhere on the water. They have live entertainment outside at the bar too. I think the rooms were only about $50 a night or so. I hear they are a bit rustic, but clean.

Cuda,

I'm leaving in the morning for Miami and plan to check out Hontoon Landing on the return trip. I'll probably be there Thursday or Friday. Give me a call tomorrow.

Plenty of them. I've spend a lot of time on Florida waters, and I've never seen so many, and so big gators as I have here.

Cooder, I really want to come up and do that run. As you know, back in like 5th or 6th grade I did that run with my folks on their little 18 ft. Glaspar Cuddy Cabin.

And now Outlaw is ready....:D

Just as side note. The river has a speed limit on it, it stops when you hit Lake George and can be what ever you want from there up to Jacksonville. Also if you are inside Silver glen, there is supposed to be no alcohol allowed. OK if beached put front but once on inside the glen no more.
Cuda if you ever want to make a run to the outback crab shack let me know, I am always in the mood for the fine dinning.

Is the Show Boat bar/restaurant open? I know they had a big fire there a while back, and I haven't been there since.

Yes, it's open. Debbie and I ate there the first night we moved here. The only thing wrong with the Showboat is it's beer and wine only. No liquor! :(

The fire just took out the covers of the dockage mostly.

Yea, I posted yesterday and it's gone. Cuda a group of us are coming down near the end of April, will find out when and let you know. It would be nice to hook up with someone that knows the area well. We have been coming down and going to the springs for years now. We stay in Palataka, and go to the springs a couple of days and usually go into Jacksonville.

Thanks Cuda, Do you ever come as far down as Swamp House Grill at High Banks or Otters at the Port of Sanford? We go there quite a bit.

No, we just moved here last summer, and between storms or hurricanes every other weekend, we didn't get to do a lot of boating. We hope to do more here shortly. Where are you out of?

We live in Lake Mary, and usually put in at Lake Monroe and head north. Sometimes we start in Deland and go up to the Glen, but not very often. We've never been north of Lake George which is a shame since I hear it is the prettiest part of the river. We also run the intercoastal around Ponce Inlet quite a bit.
