New Powerboat Magazine Teague quote

Teague states that the 39 Midnight Express is the best handling rough water boat they've tested this year. They've tested the 39 Cig Top Gun this year and the Outerlimits quattro. The Cig and Outerlimits have steps and are lighter. The Midnight Express has a straight V and is heavier.

Which made the bigger difference, weight or the steps?

YES !

And , don't forget ... there's a HUGE difference in perceived "ride" from 60 to 90 . The water is much "softer" at the slower speeds . Bet the folks at Midnight Express are passin out copies of PBM at the Miami show this year !???!?! :D

Just wiat till they test a new Apache :) .

In a boat that size, I'll take the steps for more speed thanx. How much wores can the cig and O/L ride be!

Do you think it is the lower speed then? How would they compare if the Midnight Express was faster?

Jassman, your boat is heavier isn't it? Do you think it rides better than the lighter boats?

Dreamer, the Outerlimits is a wider beam too isn't it?

Midnight Express is a beautiful boat, most are sold to US Customs. You can get the 39 with quad 300s on the back of it.

Was the Midnight Express Egg beater driven? if so what? The wright up on the Four Horsemen was quite an article. After reading it you would have thought they reinvented the wheel

I don't get it? The Midnight Express was running 4 merc verados, why would he be biased towards that over a Cig or Outerlimits?

I'm sure the Midnight is a great boat, but I don't see how an objective reviewer would fail to explain the apples to oranges comparison between it and other boats they have tested. You sure won't see that thing passing by your TG at 100+ and you definately won't see a TG chasing down and apprehending Cubans or Drug runners.

I think, If this is the type of boat the individual is looking for the Midnight Express is ahead of the pack. But no way can one compare it to any other type of boat.

I don't see why it is not apples to apples? Both are V-bottoms, just different propulsion, and no it won't pass your TG at 100, but it might pass your TG at 68 in the rough.

Customs used to use Cig Flat Decks to run down drug runners, so why wouldn't you see them use TGs if they thought they were better?

Interesting enough, my buddy, designed the hull for that 39' Midnight Express! He has ridden in the boat, said it does handle the rough water very well!

The coast guard, customs, police, etc, need boats that can be boarded and and maneuvered by anyone quickly and easily. Our style performance boats are far from friendly in those areas.

You can also factor in that outboards are far less of a mechanical issue than an I/O. The patrol boats are meant to be durable, practical, reliable, roomy, and agile.

Still an apples to oranges comparison considering the needs of the patrol.
