I've bounced it off the limiter at 100 pulling up to Catawba but normally tow at about 70-75.

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
My Tahoe is about at its limit so I do the drag and fly. Fly down one hill and drag up the next. Average speed about 68 by GPS. It always amuses me when I get to the ramp and see a diesel dually pulling these 2800 pound bass boats.

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
F-350 Dually, 42 Fountain Lightning. 90-100 Myrtle Beach to Savannah. Saw a little better than 100 at one point. It's ALL about the MYCO trailer. Those things are good for another 10-15 MPH w/ the same tow vehicle and boat behind it.

V-10 Dodge dually/25 Active Thunder being towed from Pompano to Philadelphia.......woke up on the ride home (wife driving) cleared my eyes and saw 95 mph on the speedo. Must have been the coffee!!!
Normally won't go over 70.......but then again haven't towed in 3 years!! (Hi-Dri) :D |
Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
98 Ram 5.9 magnum 4x4... 6000+ lb Baja on two axle Eagle... I've seen 90 on the flat sections of I-55 heading south towards LOTO. Then again, I've seen it go from 90 to 50 going up a hill on I-70 west of St. Louis... I think some of you know the hill I'm talking about....
Same truck, 14' Glastron on single axle tilt trailer (who knows who made it!!!)... might weigh 1000 lbs full of my fishing gear and lunch. Got pulled over for running 84 UPHILL on the way to Hardy Pond last summer. Truck doesn't know that boat is there... Cop let me go by the way... must have been a boater of fisherman. |

Man
maybe im a weenie, but i wont tow anything anywhere near that fast. 60-65 is PLENTY fast. too many things can go wrong, and that much more at speed. I think you guys are crazy pulling these trailers 80+. Its dumb in my book. Ive had a couple of close encounters and been able to stop. these trucks are not made to tow 10,000+ at 80 and stop in an emergency. |

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
This is kind of on topic.....
Have a 94 GMC 1500. Thinking about a little more truck. I pull a 5500 or so pound 26. Is a duramax necessary?? I pulled the rig from Milwaukee to Ohio. But the truck wasn't very happy. |

04 2500 HD Durmax w/Allison trany, 35 Lightning w/steel Myco dual axle trailer - 75 mph.
Could handle more I'm sure. She handles great, but fast enough for me with approx 12,000lbs. Love the trany/diesel combo. It acts like I have a jake brake when coming back down through the gears... really saves on the braking. |
Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
don't forget to leave the gps on in your boat so you can brag
your cigarette goes 81mph!! |

They are made by "Ice Metal." They are "20 x 9" on Nitto Grapplers. Here is a random link to the wheel. |
Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
Thanks B. Those are wicked-tight looking. Been contemplating new wheels myself, and now those are on the list. See you next week.

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
You can't miss us. There will be a big, obnoxious boat being towed by a big, obnoxious truck. The driver of the truck will look somewhat like Brad Pitt and a female looking like Pam Anderson will be in the passenger seat.

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
Hey the speed limit is 75 here in OK. I have electric over hydraulic brakes, and I PAY ATTENTION. I'm not breaking any laws. Get over it, and get the hell outta my way. LOTO awaits. :D :D

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
you can't tow that fast on most of the roads around LOTO, too narrow and curvy...

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
One time this Excursion was trying to pass me because the lane was ending and I did not want to let him in so I wicked the throttle while I was pulling our 38 fountain and not only did I not let him in but I started pulling on him. I think that I was going about 95 or so at that time. That will learn him!!! Normally I pull any where from 65-80 depending on the cnditions though.

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
Seems a bit risky to be going that fast (80+) with a trailer. By their nature, they aren't particularly stable. Hopefully the trailer won't go into a self-induced, under-damped oscillation, or that will be the end of it (and the truck).

try towing a cat down 135 highway running about 70, people either move or almost come to a stop.... :D :evilb: |
Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
i probably should use 5, it is a little wider, but 135 saves me 10 minutes.... :D
plus i have only brought it back a handful of times... if i did it every weekend i probably wouldn't tempt fate so much... |

I guess that I am a wimp or something, but I usually stay closer to the speed limit when towing the boat. When I had the F-450 towing either the Gladiator or the Top Gun, I always stuck to the speed limit or maybe 5 mph above, no more than that. On Interstates, I ran between the posted speed limit and 5-10 mph above, depending on traffic and conditions.
Even with the big truck, when I am pulling the Apache I stay at or sometimes just below the posted speed limit on smaller roads. On regular highways I run the posted speed limit or maybe 5 mph above and on Interstates I'll still run no more that 10 mph above the posted limit. That is the honest truth. I may not be the first one to get there, but I WILL get there. With the money that we all have invested in our trucks, trailers and boats, I don't think that there is any need to take chances with them on the highway. I'll get my speed fix in the boat, not in the truck while towing the boat. If I want to go 100mph down the highway I'll get a sports car, but I will never do it in the truck while towing that kind of load. That's just my opinion, but like I said above, I must be a wimp. :D |
Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
I tow my 47 Fountain (close to 18,000 lbs with trailer, gear and gas) at 55-60 mph MAX and keep plenty of stopping distance ahead. Like Hot Duck (Nice rig, by the way), I don't like to take chances with all the knuckleheads on the road.
A buddy of mine had a souped-up Ford diesel pickup. He brought his 42 Fountain out to Teague to get big motors put in. He told Teague, "The boat better be able to go faster on the water than on the trailer!" Another friend has a Dodge w/Cummins diesel and all the goodies, bigger turbo, bigger injecters, propane, etc. He wanted to be able to pull his 42 Fountain up the Duluth hill at 100 mph. The Duluth hill is about a 7% grade about 3-4 miles long (Guessing, it's steep and long, especially for Minnesota). He can do it! With my chipped Ford diesel and the 47, starting at 60 mph at the bottom, I'm barley doing 35 at the top. But I don't have my foot to the floor either, too hard on the equipment! |

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~
I used tow my little 30' Kachina to Havasu with my Excursion Powerstroke at 75/80 no problem. Then I lost my tranny last year and had to pay 3600.00 for a new one from Ford. I put a Banks Trans command on it and I was told not to tow in overdrive, so with the 40" tires I run in third gear at about 60/65. I takes a little longer but I noticed its alot less stressful if you have the mind set that your trying to take your time and relax.
I have a couple of friends with lifted Superduties (38" or bigger tires) and every one of them has eaten a tranny, my brother went through 3 in 2 years. He bought a Duramax and soved the problem. I need the room of the Excursion so I'm stuck with the Ford for now. Why doesn't Chevy offer the Sub with the Duramax? Not like they wouldn't sell them......... |
