Yes they do.

We are fortunate that down here we don't get hassled at all for runnng open exhaust. I just dumped my "Silent Thunder Box" on my 311 Formula and just love both the new look and new sound.

Formula,

Did you notice any change in your top speed? Seems like the Silent Thunder was one of the few low restriction muffling systems out there.

We had to remove the Silent Thunder from my bosses formula because he was getting water reversion in his engine. He has 500 h.p.'s in it and picked up 2 miles per hour and no reversion

I have not made a "balls to the wall" run yet. Will do so next time out. First time out I took it easy and just let it get used to being on the water again and making sure everything was working right.

I did notice that the midrange seems stronger, but that's a "seat of the pants" feeling. I will tell you that in the water, that Outlaw is about an inch and a half higher out of the water when docked. Between removing the Silent Thunder Box, and removing the old "cast iron anchor" Merc. exhaust units and going with the EMI Thunder aluminun system, I lost over five hundred pounds right at the props. If you have a swim platform and get two 250 lb. guys to stand on the platform at once, you will notice the back of your boat go down a little. Well mine went "up" that little. 311's are assheavy boats, and it's like I shortened the "X" demension a little and I run Hydo Quad IV props, which are stern lifting. Between the weight loss, the higher the boat is in the water now, and the new exhaust system I am hoping to see 4mph more out of her anyway. Will let you know.

I agree. They have not messed with us about making noise around here yet, but I am sure that our day will come. There have been some complaints from the people that we call "come heres". These are the people that moved to the area, bought a new condo on the water and now want to change everything. They seem to want to get rid of all of the boats and jet skis because they claim that "they disturb their peace", but so far nobody is paying any real attention to them.

Right now I use the mufflers coming in and out of harbors just to be nice, but once we get out the inlet into the ocean they can kiss my a$$. This new law says that there are no restrictions one mile offshore, so even if MD adopts it or actually begins to enforce it's current 90 db law, we will still be able to let it scream one mile off of the beach.

I guess that old saying is true about one man's noise being another man's music. To me it is certainly music, but it seems that I am part of ever diminishing group thanks to the "come heres" trying to have it their way all over the country. :(

Not sure what Hi-Perf 2000's Buddy's boat has, but last year at the NJ Camden races it gave me a Chubby it was so sweet. I think it's dry exhaust on like 700hp motors.

From the sounds (every pun intended) of it, I'd be chubbin' too.

Re: mufflers suck

Whats invovled in adding silent choice exhaust? Can you do it without removing the engine or drive? I looks like to me that the mufflers aren't really going to work anyways. I have an itegrated swim deck, with headers and a blower my boat has no chance of passing that test. It usually scares who ever is behind me when I start it up. I was thinking the only real solution is to add the silent choice exhaust. Any one have any better ideas?

Re: mufflers suck

I went through loud exhaust crap in Northern Illinois. I had a supercharged Eliminator Daytona and was probably "most wanted" by law enforcement and the Homeowner Assoc. geeks on the Rock River. The Teague switchable 4 1/2" exhaust muffler tips give you a 15-20 decible drop at your fingertips. See cops....mufflers on...no Cops ....mufflers off. They work great and the muffling device is inside the engine compartment. Looks like regular exhaust tips. For states where switchable is not legal. Hide the switch or better yet mount a dummy that says EXHAUST. When LE sees the switch show him that it is not operable and take the decible test. Sold the Eliminator and bought a Cig w/540's that decibles at 105. Riv cops and even Lake Michigan Winthrop Harbor cops said I couldn't boat in Illinois anymore. Moved to south Florida...nothing but thumbs up and smiles here.

Re: mufflers suck

By silent select I assume you mean typical thru-the prop by means of a "Y" pipe. Exhaust manifolds with short risers connected to diverters with slent select option of thru-prop or thru-transom. Works fine if you have a stock motor with cam duration under 230 degrees. If you are not stock reversion (water pulled back) will occur and ruin your motor. Oh yea...blower surge will cause reversion also. Water has to be injected into the exhaust stream at further point aft to prevent reversion. (Long risers)...Hope this helps you out.

Re: mufflers suck

I started a thread in the technical q and a section, probably a waste of time then. I have Lightning headers wich are extremely long, and a 502 mag efi with a Vortech Supercharger, once in while I get blower surge, usually when I'm docking and go in and out of nuetral, it usually only lasts a couple of minutes but it does happen once in while. So it looks like I made all the requirements to not add the silent choice. I really didn't want to add mufflers to the outside of the boat, maybe some inside the boat would be nice.

Re: mufflers suck

  blower surge is coused from a you mite call it , a pile up of fuel on the rotters wicth goes lean ,,, rich,,,lean,,, rich ok. and for silent choice ijust picthed mine becouse of revurson iam hyd cam with 636 lift wiht 1.8 rockers 262dur. most blower motes dont run long duration cams so revursion not so much a problem

You got noise restrictions--we've got MANATEE hugger's that would impose idle speed only everywhere.

I'm thinking I could find tolerable mufflers of some kind that would be better than having to put up with the damned Manatee restrictions--especially since most of those :huggers" don't have boats and probably don't know a manatee from Flipper--

There is finally a serious effort to take the Manatee off the "endangered" list which of course has the SMC's panities in such a wad that they are up around their foreheads. Despite all their lies, twisting of facts, and just ignoring the truth, the evidence is just starting to pile up too much to ignore anymore, Manatees are, and have been for the last fifteen years, on the rebound.

There is still NO scientific evidence that pleasure boats whether on plane or idleing along are THAT much of a danger. Remember, 95 % of boating deaths of Manatees are caused by larger "commercial" type vessels. Not them ceegar boats.

Bottom line is that there are too many "officers or manager types" in the Save the Manatee Club that have high paying cushy jobs, and the only way they can keep these jobs is by playing chicken little and go around screaming "the sky is falling the sky is falling". Thankfully as every day passes more and more people are starting to see through them. We've got a LONG way to go, but the journey of beating these people has started.

Formula, do you really think this is a good idea...nothing like drawing more attention to the fact that it's loud.

This might be better,
"I know it's LOUD, and there's not a thing you can do about it."

How about this..
"I'm LOUD and PROUD. Now get out of my way."

Or...
"It's LOUD, because I like it that way."

Maybe...
"Noise NAZI's. Eat my shorts."

All of these would be appropriate under those center pipes. :D

Michael

If I had a bigger boat, I'd put them ALL up. :D :D

We are lucky we don't have noise issues down here. Just the Manatee Zones. We all have our crosses to bear.
