I live in VA but my boat is owned by a corp in the state of Delaware. (I own that corp) It's all on paper, but the boat is subject to Del law not VA. Del has no sales tax or personal property tax. Even a 40k boat saves money this way in VA. Just pay a small amount to maintain the corp each year.

That is all fine but if you leave that boat in NJ or Maryland for for 90 days at a marina you are going to pay the state tax!
Each state has people going around checking on these things.
This is big money for them and they are going to collect it.
It is almost impossible to get around paying the tax.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.....Va isn't that bad, but they do some checking. We keep our boat at our private dock, or on the trailer behind the house. So far....Problem solved.

Not unless you get some sort of fuel receipt from Delaware. Been there, done that and it does work.

my neighbor got popped every time the DNR came in our creek they noted it on the lift with a FL port finally he got a bill. he went to fight it and they had a long list of where the boat was spotted even at the local bars :eek:

Friend of mine just nailed for the same thing. got notification that he owed for a boat that he traded in 2 years ago. They are getting smarter about this stuff.

The same thing happened at Turkey Point Marina. A friend of mine has his boat reg out of state at his other home and has a home in Md. He moves the boat every winter out of the marina but they claim to see it on the bay all the time and are still trying to collect the tax from him. The man is always looking for out of state reg. I see him even in the parking lots of the marinas looking at stored boats and the tow vehicle hooked up to it. Bottom line.............................................. ......They WILL get the money one way or the other!

aren't most of them like 60 or 90 days in a row? if it isn't a big cruiser, just pull it out every couple of months and take it and wash it and fill it up somewhere else and take a pic... that is how it is written in MO, has to be 60 days straight i believe before they want some money.... :D

Where does DL get you? I don't know or care....I don't live there. isn't gambling legal there?
I have done this for 4-5 years so far. It helps that my boat moves from our dock to my back yard occasionally and spends the winter in an indoor building,...makes it harder to track. I have DL numbers on my boat and pay a small amount to register it in that state. I use a Company in DL that handles all this stuff. They have over 7,000 corps. set up for people that have boats and airplanes. $3XX.00 the first year to set-up and $140ish each year in cost to maintain corp status. Sales tax in VA would have been much worse.

California used to have an exemption on sales tax if the boat was owned somewhere else for 90 days.. Many people were taking delivery in a port in Mexico... waiting 90 days and then bringing the boat into the state... They just changed the law from 90 days to 365,,, So... if you want to wait a year without having your boat in the US.. then you can save on the sales tax here. I'd rather do the Delaware deal.. Keep the boat there for a year and then bring it to California.

Some MA guys will register under NH address and dock in MA, MA DOR guys look for this and some get caught.
