30,35 cat question?
I have a question for you cat owners.
I currently have a 26' cat and want to go bigger. I am looking at a 30' cat, but for a little more money I could do a 35'. My question is a 35' just too big for lakes... ie: lake havasu, mojove and even parker, i see 28..30 Eliminators all day long, and they dont look too out of place at the river... but is a 35' 1/4 canopied race set up just over kill ? Also...how do you big boat owners like your 32-36'? do you ever wish you had stayed with a 25-30'? How about getting around docks? or beaching boats of this size? trying to make a decision....thanks |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
ANYONE???
BIG V's can awnser if you want.....LOL!! |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
what 35 are you looking at?
i have a 30 spectre and think it is just about the perfect length for go fast on a lake..... but like everybody else, i am looking to go bigger sometime soon... :D i would say staying under 36 will keep you life simplier.. towing, storage, docking will all be easier plus insurance will be easier to get and afford. |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
You have the classical case of "threefootitis". Only YOU can decide what is right for you. The best way is to ride on each and also determie how you are going to use the boat.
The mistake so many make is buy one 3 foot longer then a year later go for another 3 feet. #1: How do you use the boat. |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
I go to havasu at least one a month and also been going to Mojave and staying in laughlin....I cant imagine lauching a 35'...but then again i couldn't imagine launching a 26' when i bought it!!!!

Re: 30,35 cat question?
I have been looking at Motion, spectre, eliminator, dcb...etc
I like Motions pricing...their 35' is not a lot more than their 30!!! Any thoughts on Motion? |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
What you need to look at is how much HP you are willing to purchase to make the boat you buy run the speeds you expect.
The 32' Skater is a great boat and the new 32' Spectre is a really good looking boat also. Either of these will run respectable speeds with a pair of 525's or so. |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
i thought it had to be a motion, that 35' gives it away.... nice boat, take a look at lubejob42's....
i would take ec39's advice, plan ahead and save yourself some money in the long run... |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
Peir 57 has a new 36 spectre still on MSO with only 60 hours on it. It was on the cover of hotboat last year and I heard that they have it priced under 200K, that about 35k under any other boat that size. and about 50k under book. Spectres are one hell of a nice boat for the money. In my opinion nothing else compares for that price.

Re: 30,35 cat question?
A 30 with nice power IE TCM 900 EFI is perfect for your needs. Look at the new FORCE 29 Canopy (last months HOT BOAT ) cover boat. I have one in the OSO classifieds for sale for a quick peek...... :D

Re: 30,35 cat question?
I boat on lakes 90% of the time with my 36. I never have said it's to big for the lake. I boat on Havasu and Mohave all the time. The only issue I have is towing, but you will adapted to it. My opinion, go big now it might save ya a bit of money in the long run.

Has it saved you any money yet...................... You are so gay!!! It's way to big for a lake and you know it! JK!! |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
The only problem I see is docking at the ROAD RUNNER or FOX's! :D I'm going to a 30+ also. That's my only concern!

Re: 30,35 cat question?
My .02
My 36' cat is not to big for big lakes. When the water gets big your glad your in a bigger boat. Parker.........I would never take it there, in my opinion it is way to big for Parker! Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, Lake Havasu no problem just like Bling said! Its really nice to be able to run across those large desert basins at 100+ with tight 3-4' wind chop and just cruise. |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
I just downsized from a 38' Cig to a 28' Skater. We boat mostly at havasu, but also in the ocean as well. For me the 38 just got to be to much of a hassle on the lake. If you never plan to use your boat on a bigger body of water than Havasu you probably don't need a 36' boat IMO.

Re: 30,35 cat question?
I have a good friend who lives in Scotsdale and boats Pleasent, Havasu, and Powell in his 35 cat with trip outboards. When I was out there last he had no problem getting it on or off the trailer. He does pull it with a Powerstroke Excursion, so he can get around easy up and down the hills.
I would just say go as big as you feel comfortable pulling, stopping and docking. But that is just my .02 :D P.S. I have a 38' on a 5000 acre lake now that is overkill :D |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
I have the best of both worlds now. I own a 35 Motion 1/4 canopy and a 25 Warlock cat. The Warlock is more fun as a pleasure boat at slower speeds 40-80 it is a dream ride. 100+ it is a handful in big water. Docking is easy. The big boat rides rough until it packs air at 90mph. Then it is a blast in big water. The "wow factor" at pit stops is ten fold with the 35. I had a 30 Motion that was great but the 35 is a big step up in ride quality in the rough water. The 30 and 35 don't feel a lot different towing. They are both big boats.
The 35 is not a beach boat. First I worry about getting to close to shore with low water pickups and it is a heavy boat to push off the shoreline. Docking is fine with the big boat just need long docks. It does keep me away from some lunch stops. |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
I own a 30' Spectre and love it. I would think the issue with going bigger would be towing depending on what kind of roads you have and how far you are driving. I think the 36' Spectre is a 10' - 2" beam. I no most of us don't do it but in NC you are supposed to get a permit for over 8'-6" I believe.

Re: 30,35 cat question?
I own Brads old 30 Motion with triples. The boat is great and handles big enough water for me. I dont know if I would go bigger without thinking about what tow vehicle you own and storage also. I think the 30 is an all around perfect size and you can still bring it to smaller lakes. Just my opinion. Later, Dave

Re: 30,35 cat question?
I have a Chris Cat old heavy ride is good at LOTO except on the 4th of July then you need bigger. I don't see towing a 35 much different than a 30 launch just back it in a little more.I don't think 5ft will make much difference around docks unless you want it to fit in a slip. Now fitting it in a shop or under a carport that extra 5ft will make a difference there just buy the 35 and be done.

Re: 30,35 cat question?
How fast do you want to go?
Looking for O/B or I/O power? |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
100++++
I AM OPEN ON POWER...I KNOW A 30 WOULD BE GREAT WITH OB's AND THE 35 WOULD NEED IO's... LOL...PULLING UP AT ROADRUNNER WITH A 35' CAT....THAT WOULD BE A PRETTY FUNNY!!! :D |
Re: 30,35 cat question?
Swede makes a very good point about beam. I know a 36' skater has a wide beam and a 35 spectre is wide also. I think a 35' motion is only 9'2'' or so. All 30' cats should be legal or close.

Re: 30,35 cat question?
I have a 2001 28 TD Daytona with twins and love it. It has a huge cockpit area, larger than all other Daytona models. It's very manuverable around the docks and launches very easy too. I think the 30 Daytona would be a great size for your type of boating... :D
