What would you different?

What do you wish that you had done different with your last boat you built or bought and will do with the next one. For example on my last boat I said I wish that I spent a bit more money and did better graphics.

I am talking about things like added different sea strainers, or jumped up power a bit, changed drives, added AC, or even not put AC or a generator etc and why.

And also what things would be mandatory in your next boat as far as options and accesories. For example I will always have a boat with prelubers, an intercom system, sea strainers, swim platform, etc...

Re: What would you different?

I wish I didn't buy new,, but at the time I had a trade so I was kinda limited. while the boat was being built, I sold my trade. Then 2 weeks before I was supposed to take deliver and the dealer I bought the boat from screwed me out of 3 grand, when he asked me if I wanted my deposit back I should have jumped on it.. I would have looked for someting a couple of years old,, bigger w/ bigger power.

I also would have saved myself 5 grand and went with just the 496 mag, and hopped it up to 525 with a Raylar package for the same money the H.O. cost.

I wouldn't have bought a Baja!

And, I'd have made better friends with faster, bigger boats...and no time to use them - so I could run them for 'em!!! :evilb: :D

I would have bought the boat with bigger power and better drives. It just does not pay to start over with power and drives.

I would like some FLASHY graphics and a 12v/120 refrigerator. Genset would be nice but have only needed it once last year. Other than that I love the 37AT. :D

hehe but seriously, i woudl have bought a project baot with a wasted engine instead of buying a runner then turning it into a project. They have to be TRASHED when you pick them up with the intention of rebilding them!

Re: What would you different?

1. I wouldn't buy a baja
2. I wouldn't ever buy a single engine boat again
3. I would buy used,not new
4. I wouldn't put 60 grand in upgrades in a 60grand boat that is now pronbably only worth 30!!!

On my first boat a Donzi Z25, I paid too much for it, got caught up in a pretty paint job. should have bargained it down more.(so much for helping a friend out).should have bought bigger.
My 311(still have, its for sale;)) I'm VERY happy with, runs great, reliable, just should have waited to buy bigger...so I did, i just bought a 42 tiger and pick it up in a few weeks, everyone has seen the one I bought and I couldnt be happier, I will add some paint to personalize it, and maybe next winter add some HP to it, other than that I'm a happy camper :D...Rob

I Wouldn't Change Anything About Our Boat, I Don't Know If My Old Man Differs From That But A 38 Non- Step Cig Staggered Has Always Been My Dream Boat. Well I Guess The Only Thing I Would Change Which It Will Have Sooner Or Later # 6's O Yea And Ride It(enjoy It )

Re: What would you different?

Thinking back to the 40' Hustler 1994 that my partner and I ordered with triple 502 Magnums and Blackhawk drives.

Delete the:
air conditioning
refrigerator
private head
full cabin
microwave oven

Add:
1/4 cabin
porta potti

I would have worked closer with Gary Meisenberg of MerCruiser to iron-out the Blackhawk drive failures. When all three were running, this boat was spectacular!!

Ed you got it right now, for the inside an offshore boat cabin to us needs:
-Something flat to crash on when pickeled.
-And a porta potti to keep her happy.
Even a radio has a hard time in 6' waves.

Allthough in your list after a descent poker run you can take all of these out easily, I have seen those items on the floor in pieces in other boats many times.
-refrigerator
-microwave oven
and usually the air conditioning is t!ts up after a good pounding.

Ya know thats exactly why I went with the Tiger and not the 419 I was looking at. all last season, never once used the fridge, the microwave or the head(although my daughter did once). Thats why I was asking you and Craig so many questions:D

Plugged the shorepower in ONCE the whole time we owned the boat!

Only to use the battery charger if I remember correctly.

Re: What would you different?

Better finish in engine compartment, paint vs gel.
Paint transom black
Konrad drives

!!

Last year I saw a 38 Scarab powered the same way. It was at a shop and for sale at a great price if you can stand the maintenance.

I would be willing to bet that the new generation of XR and ZX drive improvements would fix the Blackhawk problems I had 11 years ago.

I would have waited a year and bought Rob's 311.

Seriously.

What would I do different? Buy a finished boat. :D

If I were buying.......

1. Skip the expense of graphics.

2. Invest in #6 Drives or Arnesons

3. Buy too much horsepower [ever hear anyone say I wish I'd have bought smaller motors?]

4. Spec no more than a quarter cabin.

5. Delete deck hatches

6. Minimal deck hardware and all of it flush.

7. Personally select hardware and accessories.

8 Plumb with large 12" sea strainers

9. Use a top rigger. ie Bobby Moore, John Pompi etc.

10.Rear bolsters.

I could go on..... :D

im in the middle of doing the above including john pompi!!!! minus #4 im doing a std cabin..
