Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
Sharkey,
It's been a while since this happened, and I've burned out more than a little gray matter since then but as I recall: Owner Bedford Davie, driver Bob Herring, hull Karelsen 3 point (some say it was a 4 point) hydro, engine heavily modified Evinrude F-1 V8. Actual record was 176MPH. This was a full out effort by OMC and their racing division, 2nd Effort. No well financed, big name effort has occured since then, to my knowledge. A friend of mine who owns the outboard drag record (7.52 @ 156) told me "it's dangerous, it's expensive, and it's not easy". I couldn't agree more. As for Michael Dixon running 143.8 in an open "production" hull, that is very impressive too. I don't know if there is an APBA or UIM class record for that, however. Regards, Steve |
Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
Thank you Steve!
That was the point I was making. The 143.8 mph was from what I gathered, a "Production Hull" River Rocket, not that this was the actual Outboard record. 176 in a hydro is a whole other animal. What engine did your friend use for the 156 pass? |
Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
Sharkey,
That run was at the Augusta, GA APBA race in 2002 (I think). The race was sanctioned by IHBA after that, and then unfortunately cancelled for 2005 by the city due to downtown riverfront renovations. I got to see the Hot Licks TF hydro run 244 there last year, WOW  ............ Jon Wright owns and drives a Pugh Hydro. Same builder (Gary Pugh) as the F-1/Champ/SST120 tunnel boats. The motor was a heavily modified Merc 2.5V6, with LOTS of N20, and a custom built mechanical fuel injection system (all built by Jon). Jon crashed the boat a year later at that same race, but has a new toy that should be just as fast or faster. No use inspending all that time and money if you're not going even faster, right? You can see the new boat over at www.screamandfly.com . General discussion page 2, thread "Wow, you gotta see this". Regards, Steve |
Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
TWST: Who do you consider your closest competition?
Mr. Fountain: In the sports boats arena, there would be boats like Formula and Baja. In the fishing boats there are Grady White, Contender and dozens of others. But those would be some notable ones in those areas. In the cruisers there are even more. Probably the leading company there is Sea Ray, a division of the Brunswick Company, and behind Sea Ray are Bayliner, Formula Cruisers, Hatteras and many others. So there are a lot of manufacturing companies building the cruisers as well as the fishing boats and sports boats we spoke of. TWST: What opportunities lie ahead for you? Mr. Fountain: We think the opportunities for where we are trying to go are really outstanding. When we started this company 25 years ago, we didn’t own any land, buildings or tools. For 24 years or so we grew this company. The focus was on research and development, spending millions that way to come up with the good products, to promote those products through racing, through fishing and through marketing, and it cost millions and millions over the last 24 years. At this time today, as we speak, the entire focus of Fountain Powerboat has changed from growth to profitability. Why this change? Well, I’m now 63 years old and I’m looking for an exit strategy. When I started this business, I was 38 years old. At the time I started I was a souped up life insurance agent with a law degree. I got into life insurance and doing estate planning, and I migrated into the boat business and then eventually ceased doing the estate planning, law and the other things that went with it. So I grew this company from where it was at the beginning, which was nothing, to where it is today. We started it from its infancy with tobacco stalks growing out in the fields where we now are. Now that we are where we are with the brand image, we have the millions that we’ve spent, I want to focus all the financial resources into profitability on the bottom line, which will enable me to secure a better price as I exit the company. Along those lines, I have recently entered into a joint venture or partnership with the Brunswick Corporation, the owner of Mercury Marine. I’m the largest buyer in the world of high-performance products from Mercury Marine because I buy all their high-performance engines, maybe half of them, let’s say. Our arrangement is such that over the next four years I’ll help this company grow. I have to buy engines exclusively from Brunswick’s company, Mercury Marine. We share technologies and we share opportunities in the growth of the fishing fleets, the cruiser fleet and our sports boats. Then on July 1, 2007, they have a call to purchase the company. So I think we clearly have the exit strategy that we need. We’ve done it with the largest marine company in the world, the Brunswick Corporation, which owns Bayliner, Sea Ray, Hatteras, Boston Whaler, Bajas and has a call on my company approximately four years from now. |

Garbrecht Dead at Age 62 By DURWARD BUCK Ledger Correspondent WINTER HAVEN -- Gary Garbrecht loved speed. He once drove a reporter up U.S. 27 at 140 mph while chatting about his plans to sponsor powerboats in direct competition with manufacturing giant Mercury Motors. He was successful in the quest. He had worked for Mercury as director of its high performance division in the 1970s, and used his expertise in developing tunnel boats using his own propellers and engines manufactured by Outboard Marine Corporation. Between the two companies, Garbrecht's boats won an nine Formula One world titles. When he wasn't developing power boats, Garbrecht was spending time with his collection of revolvers or playing golf with friends. He collapsed on the golf course at Lake Region Yacht and Country Club Sunday, and later died of at Winter Haven Hospital. He was 62. "He had had a stroke about four years ago, but he had recovered and seemed to be fine," said his youngest son Bart Garbrecht. The latest venture for Gary and Bart involved a partnership with the late Bernie Little of Lakeland in ownership of the Unlimited Hydroplane Series. Little's Miss Budweiser, with its multiple world championships, was a focal point of the series. After Little's death in 2002, Garbrecht ran the series for a while, but sold the unlimited series to Trint Ling of Orlando in Sept. 2004. He came to Polk County in 1982 and formed Second Effort Performance of Products. The plant at Lake Hamilton concentrated its efforts on the design and manufacture of propellers. He had a staff of five. Two years later, while teaming with OMC, he won a national high points championship and the offshore Class 1 world championship. He fine-tuned an eight-cylinder outboard, attached it to a tunnel boat and set a world outboard record record of 176 mph which still stands. His collection of Smith and Wesson revolvers is said to be the largest in the world. He spent his time between homes in Polk County and Waverly, Tenn., with sons Bart and Alan involved in his racing ventures. Alan raced tunnel boats from the smallest 45 class to the largest class. He was married to Marcia for 41 years. They also had a daughter, Amy. "I think he retired three or four times, but he always got back into the thick of things," Bart said. Memorial services for Gary Garbrecht will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Oak Ridge Funeral Home on Havendale Boulevard in Winter Haven. |

The driver "Hank" should be getting out of the hospital today. From what I hear he will be ok. Looking at the boat, it doesn't look like it took on too much damage either. It held up very well.

Plus, 170 MPH in the hudson river isn't the smartest thing. I don't think they'll be able to see a submerged telephone pole at 170+, a 55 galon drum, or a "dead horse" (true story) that a friend of mine hit in a race a number of years ago. |

Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
DPT, you are still assuming they want to race boats... what if they don't? what if they want to build killer poker run boats that are the fastest boats out there? not everybody cares about racing....

Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
Hey Tracie,
Let see them manufacturers show up for the race on June 18th! 1st boat to the Tappan Zee wins! Just like the offshore racing classes being stocked up with Fountains, odds are pretty good that one of them would win. In the end, being awarded many championships. At this upcoming event you can rest assured there will be many Outerlimits stocked there too. Not only will they win because of the amount of Outerlimits entered, but also because of their pure speed! Maybe this year will be different, and some of the "High-tech" Fountains will actually attempt the Hudson... A race course is a race course. Straight or circle. At least with a straight course, it reduces the chances of a Fountain spinning out. ;) |

Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
I guess I'll never see you at Englishtown Drag Strip then huh? :D
I did drags with my Outboard. Even went out to PA to watch a few where your buddy George Fuller was racing. OOps! To you, he wasn't racing. People take their $hit seriously whether it's a 1/4 mile in a straight line or running 2 mile circles. Racing is racing. That is until you have to pull back on the throttle because you may be going too fast..... :drink: |

Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
Lovin' the passion here.
Sharkey raises a good point. As the market turns ( or turns not ) toward poker run boats, even though it's not a "race", it would be nice to see Fountain show up at the big U.S. poker runs with some serious poker run hardware. Right now, among the V-hull manufacturers, Outerlimits boats probably are generating the most "buzz" at the big poker run events. Maybe THAT is what the Fiore's are going for. If so, maybe we can understand why OL seems to take the "fastest V-hull" challenge so seriously. BTW. . . I talked with Mike Fiore for a while at the Clevelander ( it was LATE ) during the Miami Show. . . real straight shooter, real nice guy. We talked about the "challenge" a bit. He said that their speed run at Cumberland had been postponed, but will certainly happen. Not necessarily at Cumberland, but when they think they can make a serious charge at the record. . . . really a nice guy - and I was wearing a Fountain jacket. |

Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
DJD,
In the times that you raced, did your OL ever spinout in a turn? P.S. Looks like Crew Chief DPT Motorsports has tossed in his wrenches... :( :( C'mon now Dennis, you know that if the majority of the boats out on a race course are Fountains then odds should be pretty good that one of them would win. BTW, I won't tell George you don't think he is a racer because he drives in a straight line.... :D :D :D ;) |
Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
Sharkey,
In all of the racing and testing, we never had any spin outs. Wild Child was the 3rd OL that I owned, and I never had a spin in any of them! To pick up on DJD, my capable cockpit buddy and driver of "Wild Child", we never claimed to be the fastest, but the OL hull sure loves it ROUGH!!! :) As for the competition in F2. In a rough race, it was always close race between Wild Child, Roger and David in the Invensys Fountian, and Brett in the Cigarette (Meesookookie!) and the French boys in another Cig. any any day, it was ususally a toss up as to who would take the win. On a personal note, there will never be another race like race #1 in the 2000 Worlds in Key West!!! Marcus |
