Trailer Tires?
I was down working on my boat this past weekend and noticed that I probably need new tires. The tires are Load Star H78-15ST's and they aren't bald, but it seems that the are wearing funny (scalloping) on a few of them. Has anyone else had this problem and what causes it?
The tires can't have more 4000 miles on them. I've heard in the past that people really like the Goodyear Marathon radials. Are they better than the ply tires? |
Re: Trailer Tires?
Triple axle right???
That's probably just from tight turning in a small space... like at the ramp or in the yard... Skip on the Carlisles.. I can tell you that from experience... |
Re: Trailer Tires?
Craig,
There's another thread about trailer tires in Technical Q&A. Everyone recommends Goodyear Marathon. The original Carlisles lasted 2,000 miles and blew on mine. |

Re: Trailer Tires?
I need some for my trailer as well. I unfortunatly only have a dual axel trailer so I need to make sure that they can really carry the load.... Last tires I got were some no name deal, not cheap but they were excelent on the road and still look new. Unfortunatly they will not fit on the new rims I got.

Re: Trailer Tires?
I second Goodyear Marathon, but I have Road King LT truck tires on my current trailer which are doing well (replaced one due to a cut, and another due to one side balding caused by a bad wheel bearing; the other 5 are orginial). Jassman always runs Cooper Discoverer(s) on his trailers. I would consider the same. Make sure you call Outlaw Motorsports. They can get everything.

Re: Trailer Tires?
Scalloping effect... possible cause is bent axle. We had a bent axle and the scolloping effect wore the tires through in a matter of a minimum miles. The affect seemed to pattern a progressive larger flat spot diminishing through to smaller flat spots. The wheel wants to steer out, but is then pulled back inward and then process repeats itself, eventually wearing the scalloping look. Not to say this is your problem.... We replaced the axle and all was well again. It was an eagle trailer that came with the boat. We ordered the next larger capacity axle for the replacement. Good luck!

Re: Trailer Tires?
Yeah , tires don't cup themselves...gotta be some type of alignment problem(including a bent axle). Been there...done that :(

Re: Trailer Tires?
all you have to do is look who is asking the question.. you know craig, probb runs like 90mph in tow, busts up every curb he can, and must make one too many maneuvers to get where he needs to be. good thing he has that new junk box chevy, he wont even notice when he gets a blowout with his no name brand tire hes running pulling his baby.. what a clown, a swine, just a general waste of a man.. drop me a line any time if you need some hints about how to be a man.. Re: Trailer Tires?
Hey Craig,
What ever Brand Tire you decide to go with, get a Radial Tire!! The only reason you would want to buy a Bias is because you can't afford a Radial!!! The Marathons are great tires for sure, that's whats on my Trl. I don't have a price list her at home but I'm almost positive our 225/75R15's D ply are around $70.00. and the Generals and Towmaster's are $50.00 The 205/75R15 C ply Marathons are around $60.00. with Outlined White Letter $69.00 When your shopping make sure the initials ST are in front of the Size of the Tire. Re: Trailer Tires?
I also need tires and my galvanized rims look like crap. Anyone know where to get a good deal on 6 nice Rims? They are a 6 lug. Should I go with Aluminum rather then chrome? My tralior gets dunked in salt water all the time.

My trailer is a 2001 Manning with three 6000 lb. axles. I'm sure that the wear is due to sharp turns at the ramp and at the lot where I keep the boat to get it backed into the building. The tires that are on it now are "Loadstar" H78-15ST. What size does that convert to in radial sizes???? Mitch...check your PM |
Re: Trailer Tires?
I have seen lots of crappy tires cup themselves. Bent axles and misalignment is just one cause of cupped tires.

Re: Trailer Tires?
no recall on mine. it was built after the june date.. i think im ok.. i hope. i called mat raymond on that a while ago.. im still going to smoke your ass, bald trailer tires and all.. maybe your axles are bent...

Re: Trailer Tires?
My Rocket trailer tore up the tires due to bent axles. You could look at them and see the spindles were bent.
My current McClain trialer "scalloped" a tire as well, a middle one. I replaced the bearings and races on that side of the axle, and no problems since. Craig, I know you did all of your wheel bearings last year, but did you replace the races? Its probably worth the effort on that one side of that axle. |
