Clear Lake Boating

Hey all, I am looking at purchasing a home in clear lake, it is located in an area called Lake Cove. I have never taken a boat back in the channel, but it is the bridge closest to turtle club what size of boat can i get back there? I saw a scarab back there that I didn't know, but I believe that it was a 43, I was told that sometimes if conditions were just right when the tide was high that he couldn't get back home, later I was told that this information was incorrect. There is apparently about 18" of good depth through the channel to get back there at low tide, but this bridge presents a problem, I am considering a black thunder or getting something in the 40-45' class with a nice cabin, this may be deal killer on the home to me. I would like some information if you don't mind.

Re: Clear Lake Boating

That bridge is LOW! The best thing to do is watch for the tide extremes, (a lot this time of year!) and take a boat there and measure it. A forty footer is pretty tall...

I've heard of some guys getting stuck in Taylor Lake for MONTHS waiting for low enough tides to get their boat out. And Taylor's bridge is a lot taller than the one by the Turtle.

See ya on the lake!

Re: Clear Lake Boating

There is a large Scarab back in the Lake Cove addition (subject area). The Scarab belongs to a Houston policeman. Going into the neighborhood from NASA Parkway, it's in the first channel on the right side. The bridge going into there is very low as Jim said, so choose the tides carefully.

I disagree about Taylor Lake though. We've lived on Taylor Lake for over 20 years; there are times of the year when the water is too low, but that's Dec, Jan, etc. after a strong "Norther" blows the water out of the lake. First: I wouldn't go out when it's that cold and second: when it's blowing that hard. I've never seen it cause a problem for "months".

Taylor Lake is a more desirable area to live.

Why do you have tides in a lake????

bglz42 03-14-2005 09:23 AM

Re: Clear Lake Boating

Clear Lake, where it's neither clear, nor a lake! Clear Lake and Taylor Lake are tributaries to Galveston Bay, and are subject to strong tides. Like Dueclaws was saying, the winter months can get very interesting!

Dueclaws and Dingy, flag us down sometime. Look for the little red Thoroughbred called Seain' Red. Would love to meet ya! :D

We live on Clear Lake, near Clear Creek, get with Jim or me and we'll get you out for a tour sometime! Lake Cove access is very low, keep looking around the lake for better access, there are some nice townhomes available with slips on Davis Road in League City - PM me for more info.

krakmeup, we have looked in taylor lake the only other home with lake access that is in our price range it wasn't built too well. The thing is this home is GREAT perfectly laid out etc. We don't want to spend over about 475-500.

krakmeup 03-14-2005 04:13 PM

Re: Clear Lake Boating

In that price range you have lots of options - take a hard look around, unless you want to stay in Harris County and pay higher taxes :) Clear Lake separates it from Galveston County....

Hope to see you out there -

I used to live in Timber Cove.... we had a 27' excalibur and never had trouble getting in and out.... that part of taylor lake floods..... our house was a flood house... they are great as long as you can get insurance on them... get a new bottom floor every 3-5 years..... you should definately check if the house you are looking at floods..... also if it has a hering bone tile floor which the tile looks like wood... it is my grandma's old house... I think it is back up for sale... I did the floors in it.

Re: Clear Lake Boating

The guy with the scarab in lake cove is Richard Goff, he owns AIG construction wich builds most of the boat houses in the area. Just stop buy and talk to him he will tell you if what you want to do is a good idea, because of his buisness he pretty much knows the channels like the back of his hand. The bridge can get real close in the summer when the tides are high and the water can be too low in the winter with the tides out and a north wind. I have a 30 foot boat with a radar arch and have never had to turn around and not go under the bridge but I would guess with a 40 something foot boat with an arch you might be in trouble.

Re: Clear Lake Boating

If I were movine to clear lake/ Houston area.... I would try to stay on clear lake... or maybe back up clear creek in freindswood.... stay where you have bay access without low bridges.... the south side of clear lake... mostly the southshore harbor area... or in your price there might be something..... well there is a little island there... that isn't really an island... drive all around through the backroads off of 2094..... there is new stuff being build close to egret bay and 2094

It is a 38'.

I have heard that, but only after a front pushes all the water out of the lake. So the summer is okay. :)

Exactly! Plus this kills the idea of taking the go fast down to the sport fish :-D

Well, if there is a realtor around that can find some thing, I will give you our specs, we have been searching around har etc. we haven't signed a buyers agreement yet.

1. 3-4k sqft.
2. Channel or clear lake access nothing on the bay directly.
3. 400-500k range, any more and I am taking budget from the boat LOL
4. Built within the last 5 years, idealy we would find something that either is ready for sheet rock within the next week or so, or even sheet rock hung.
5. 3 bedrooms minimum with a hobby room or a 4th bedroom minimum.
6. Must be able to own my own boat lift and boat dock.
7. Must have some yard, enough that a couple of large dogs can run around.
8. Two car garage or better.
9. Must be free standing, no town homes.

Thats all guys, thanks for your help.

There is a new street going in on the south side of the lake, it is on a channel. Not sure on how big a dock you can put in. I think the lots start around the 150 to 200 range. So I think you can get in a new house for 400-500K, if you want to go that route. Good luck!

What part of town do you live now?

TheDingy 03-15-2005 08:20 AM

Re: Clear Lake Boating

TopSpin: That is the scarb in question, great pictures the new street that I have found is on Lake Cove as well. We looked for a couple of hours last night and there are only four homes, one on Taylor lake and three on Lake Cove LOL the one on Taylor neither of us like. Currently we live in Hillshire Village area.

The new street is on the other side of the channel Davis Rd is on. (see map)

I think it is an extention of Constellation Blvd.

Thanks for the information Feaver, I just checked on har and the only home currently on the market is 800k I will drive down there this afternoon. The only thing with it just being a lot is we are about a year out, and neither of us want to wait... Impatient I know...

Re: Clear Lake Boating

Which house on Taylor Lake did you tour? I know of two for sale, but one is older than 4-5 years. It's getting difficult to find anything for less than 500,000. You might consider an older/remodeled home too (newer isn't always better IMHO). Our home is older, but it's been remodeled/updated 6 times (it's not for sale).

Ernie is correct about Timber Cove, that area has low spots. The east, south, north sides of Taylor have higher elevation.

TheDingy 03-15-2005 09:25 AM

Re: Clear Lake Boating

Dueclaws, it was the one on Seabrook Island, it was at the 550k mark, but we don't care for the home's floor plan or the builder that originally built it. We already have an older/remodeled home, and don't feel like dealing with two homes that are needing maint. so for this, it is a new home only! I know it is hard to find stuff under 500k, but that is where it is at right now, it is hard enough convincing the other half to go that far south.

Also the constelation point, we did look there last weekend, everything is 6-7 months out minimum, more likely a year or so.

krakmeup 03-15-2005 09:31 AM

Re: Clear Lake Boating

Look down Davis Road - several houses in your criteria I believe.....

Re: Clear Lake Boating

I know of a custom home for sale that's in the 600's; it's FSBO and about 4-5 years old (not listed on HAR). Maybe you can make an offer? Never know.
Send me an email if you're interested.

The pink one? If so I know the owner of that house. I really liked the modern look of the inside. Nice pool too.
