basically they don't have springs and use pnuematic cylinders to open and close the valves.... springs would never last, that was one of the biggest accomplishments i believe in f1... everything else depends on those motors spinning 19k, but with the new motor rules, i don't know how long those motors can live, they want them to last two races when most don't last one... should be interesting to watch... i went to indy two years ago with a buddy who works for marlboro as a rep and we got all access passes to the ferrari pits, i don't even think trick was the word for it, we got to see everything, but no cameras....

Light pistons and rods are right. You put them on the table and the slight breeze a person makes when walking by will blow them like paper.

i read an f1 magizine that stated a few teams were making pistons and blocks out of beryllium but when i looked it up it is a highly toxic metal(unobtainum)

that is correct... i think it is even worse when being machined... nothing on a f1 car is "normal" high performance stuff...

i've been aroudna few vintage (mid 90s) f1 cars at the prep shop i use for my formula cars (abtou 10000000 steps removed from f1) and and even the older cars are ridiculous.
Berylium jesus. thats pretty out there. Hey when you have a huge budget and an owner with a bigger ego who has to win you try anything that might give you an edge!
