the larger steps remind me of a post a long time ago with steve koss talking about a "new" APACHE and boatbuilding... what boat is it?

Those curved "buttresses" for the swimstep are reminiscent of Hustler.

What is the purpose of the "steps" way up in the bow? They'd never be in the water if the boat was on plane, or am I missing something?

It's definitely a plug given the plywood lip around the edge. The notched transom is interesting, but I don't see that the forward notches would do much. They shouldn't be in the water at running speed.

The forward steps would work when the bow dips into oncoming waves. I think this is a good idea.

It is Sunsation's new 43 or aka F-4. I beleive the forward steps also helps the bow skid thru a turn a bit to prevent a hard bow steer. The 32 Innovator has it as well.

The forward steps, or notches are for eye candy only. They do nothing, but they look cool. It is now being placed on all Sunsation hulls - kind of a signature thing.

If you go over to the Sunsation forum you can find a thread that has been running for several months that follows the build process of this plug.
