Have a friend that may be taking a job in Tampa at Macdill AFB. Since he knows exactly zero about the area, I'm invoking the power of OSO.

Looking for a nice neighborhood, middle to upper-middle class (he's got a family, so think kid-friendly). Doesn't want to spend hours each day in the car, so it needs to be reasonably close.

He wants to start house-shopping using realtor.com, but unless you know the area it's hard to tell if the house is 10 minutes or 10 hours away from the office.

yea lived there for 2 years..south Tampa is nice ...
Clearwater..Largo?? Brandon ..Bradenton Sarasota?? all nice I lived in Wesley chappel but that is a Haul..like 45 min easy

The other guys are right on. Brandon, appolo Beach, St. Pete is a short cruise across the bridge, clearwater...

Just tell him NOT to go North where he would have to take the Veteran's Expressway. The areas up there are nice, but he would expect at least an hour in traffic each way every day.

i dont know the areas aroudn there much but i do visit Tampa 3-4 times per year sine i have a good frind that lives down there as well. The only thing i can say about that area is that anywhere you need to go you can get there rather quickly via some highway....it actually amazes me that there isnt more traffic around there with the amount of cars constantly on the roads

I dunno Mike....ive never had any problems when down there.....guess i have always been lucky in the timing i guess! Always seemed to me like there were tons of cars on the road yet everyone was hauling balls! About the only time i ever got caught up in traffic was going into Clearwater right before you hit that big fountain thing...

I'm actually typing this from tampa right now, from my sister's house in new hyde park. I just dont know where the air base is. I have seen the rush hour commute to north tampa where all the new developments are.....it's just awful, and this is coming from a guy from Jersey. My sis's house on the wrong side of the tracks in new hyde park is nice, good sized yard and a pool for the kids. House is only about 2000 square tho. i think she paid in the 6's. Real estate is through the roof around here tho....they just put up a 4 town house unit on one corner lot a few down the block....each unit is 600 + more than 2000 sq tho.....lots of builders getting variances and building townhouses around here....
