V8 Marine Diesels

Hi everyone!
I want to do a simple market suvey in this forum. We are the caribbean distributor for Marine diesel USA. Our product is a V8 marine diesel engine, which is a direct replacement to small and big block gasoline engines with horsepower ranging from 175-400 HP operating at 3800-4000 rpm. www.marinedieselusa.com What concerns or comments can you share with us in reference to the HP market and Diesels? |
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
I love the website, it's quite informative, especially for someone that knows very little about engines like myself. My question is, once you get to the 400hp level there might be a net loss of a few mph on top end speed when comparing to a 415 hp gas engine. Are there any alternatives to go to a higher hp diesel configuration? Will you be offering a larger engine? Also, is there any information on hours before overhuling these engines?
|
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
Also, could you give a ballpark idea for pricing?
|
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
Is overall creuise speed higher? In other words, if my top end speed might be reduced a bit on the 400hp engine when compared to a 415 gas engine, can I still creuise at nearly full RPMs like in most diesels, or is the fact that it is supercharged require that I cruise at, say, 2,600 rpm?

Re: V8 Marine Diesels
I've looked at the website in the past even emailed them about approx. speeds in my Sonic with the tigre shark but no replys. I think its a great idea but with the torqe of the deisel the bravo drives that most of run would be junk....now with a Konrad drive......but now your talkin serious money!!!

Thanks for the quick reply. On the 400 model, Torque specs are 750lbs@1700 rpm, the 300/300 are 515lbs@1700 rpm.Typically what happens with a conversion is that we increase the pitch of the prop in order to compesat for the torque. for instance The Company repowerd a 22 scarab that was doing 50 mph with a 454. They installed a md300 hp and pitched the prop up to 28" the boat picked up an extra 12 mph running at 3400 rpm.
To answer you second question. The 300 is getting about 5000-6500 hrs before rebuilding. on the 400 we anticipate about 600-1000. Pricing ranges from 19898.00 for the 300 and about 26,500. CMI is aparently making headers for the engines as well. Cruising is 3200 rpm. Im working now on a pair of 400s to put im my scarab 34. Ill be running dbd stern drives. To give you some sort of idea, there is a 30f scarb sport in sweeden that is runnign 81mph with a pair of md 300s with the dbd drive. Here is a pic |

Re: V8 Marine Diesels
Typically 300 hp model would require a bravo x drive and the 400 the XR
|
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
I've spoken to the guys at marinediesel usa and brought it up here before.
I think its a great idea. Even if you lose a few mph on top end, you'll gain big time on cruising speeds. Plus your range would kick @ss. I think pricing on the 300 is around 20k and 400 @ 30K. I can't remember if that was w/ drives or not. Also, the konrad is the way to go w/ these. Still waiting for the konrad bravo replacement. I thought a pair of 300s or a single 400 would be nice in a 28 pantera. |
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
Those prices, that is without a drive or exhaust. Can you tell us what it does include?
|
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
I really like the idea and it looks like price is in same ballpark as Yanmar pricing and tth MarineDiesel is alot easier to retro fit that Yanmar.
The beauty is range and fuel cost. I kinda like the exhaust for mosquito control. |
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
What about weight?

Great question Kendall.. Aren't most diesel engines heavier than the gas engines? Although if I was thinking about diseals in a go fast I would be leaning toward Nortech with 1050 manns!!!! If they could only build those Manns a lot lighter we would be in!!! Reliabilty out the ass........... |
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
Titan- I read an article in one of the boat mags about the MANs. It seems they have gotten the weight on the 2000 series direct injection engines down to BBC weight and get this 1200-1500 hp

Re: V8 Marine Diesels
Really? Has anyone used this package yet? I am assuming they will put Arnesons with this much HP.. What are the torque numbers?

Re: V8 Marine Diesels
Hi there.
I have a marinediesel engine in my Cobra 860 centerconsolle. (cobra 860 is an old splash off of a magnum 27) The weigth of the marinediesel is 415 kg that is aprox the same as a big block v8 gasoline. I have had my hammerhead diesel engine for 2 years now and run it on a standard mercruiser bravo one 1.36 gearing. My boat weights about 2,5ton with full dieseltank and watertank. the engine now 300hours. I had my bravo outdrive checked this winther, it has no wear at all. usally drive my boat att 3100rpm. |
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
Tried yo attach pics of a antoher Cobra 860 with hammerhead diesel engine.
But with no sucsess. so here is the link to the pics of it. http://jeep.arendal.nu/gallery/album08 |

With the Arensens they would make a great combo in a 40+ footer! |
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
Don, there is a dealer in freeport.
A tigershark would be nice in the progression. |
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
I'm in the process of working with some college students that race Dodge cummins trucks.... the 5.9 is a straight 6 but they are getting awesome HP and torque out of daily driver reliable engines.... and they run them HARD... I know a boat is very hard on engines, but these motors are gonna be awesome..... we are also working on a bullett-proof transmission low loss system.

But think of it this way... you'd be able to run to block island and back on 1 tank of fuel... and cruise at 60 the whole way. Maybe JC can port it and massage it a bit to get 500hp! :drink: |

And still burn less than a tank. :D |
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
The engies come complete with standard stainless steel exhaust, 9 pin receptacle for merc harnesws. They are priced at 20k for the 300 less drives. The weigh approx 948 lbs.
Another neat feature about the engines is that the parts are available through the GM parts network so overall cost of ownership is significantly less than yanmar. The Tigershark 400hp will be out this summer, and from what I hear from the factory it should be putting out about 700 ft/lbs@1800 rpm. playing with the idea of putting a pair in my scarab. The factory also offers powdercoating and chroming on the components to give that tricked out poker run look. |
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
ANy plans for a higher hp engine? Maybe a V10 or 12?
|
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
Storm
I do believe the future of this sport will turn to disel engines and two speed tranny's. Reliable it would be.. If they can build a drive to handle it.. I am anxious to see the new Konrad Shiftable drive. I am sure we will see it on here! |
Re: V8 Marine Diesels
Ok, Guilderoy didnt replay my post. So I do it my self. I have heard that dahlnaval guys wrecked large # of engines...
|

I think we sell the x diesel drive for around 8000.00 complete with transom assembly. So figure around 28000 engine and drive. |
Whatever happened with these engines?
