anyone have problems with them leakin like a biotch? I'm thinking about welding shut the water passages at the riser and going to dry stacks.

Dyno- I feel you pain. I had my leaking mpi manifold off 3 times before I figured out the REAL problem. On my manifold, the brass insert stuck out a little farther than the matting surface of the manifold. To check, lay a GOOD staight edge across the mating surface so one end rests on the brass portion. You should not be able to see much daylight under the straightedge.
On mine, there was so much daylight that the brass was the only part contacting the gasket and every time I would torque the bolts, the brass would cut thru/displace the gasket right around the water passage.
Very carefully, take a good file and lower the brass until it is flush with the surrounding aluminium. Best done by a machinist I guess but the file worked for me. Hasn't leaked since. Hope that helps.

maybe I should read these posts better before I reply. I see now that you meant exhaust manifold...not intake manifold. But maybe it will help someone else.

Thats the guess right now...I replace the gasket every spring and still have problems....

been down that road before. weld up the passages they are not needed with the ss risers. those passages are there for the stock type risers that don't use a jumper hose. i've seen quite a few water leaks on emi exhaust & i'm going to spend more for better quality in the future.

Ditto what Vette said...I had a gasket actually blow out to the interior on the exhaust passage and chocolate milked my engine/ scrubbed my cam over a damn $5 part!. The crossover passages aren't needed on my 4" risers as they have an external water hose to carry h2o from manifold to riser. I actually high temp RTV'd mine closed and compressed with a SOLID gasket (not cut outs for water provision) and clamped with the riser. Been fine ever since. BAD design from EMI. If they need these passages for their other risers, they should make a kit to eliminate this problem with the 4" Stainless riser...

dyno.. call EMI, they will sell you solid gaskets that will cover up the water passages. Then you just have to run a external jumper hose from manifold to riser. Most of the EMI's the last few years have no water passages in the manifold anymore, all use jumper hoses I beleive.

Having similar problems with Eddie Marine manifolds. A poor design and workmanship of the chrome risers for sure. Mine are getting cracks at the weld joint where the elbow is welded to the the straight pipe. Mine are about 2yrs. old and have the water ports on the manifold side. Is EMI the only ones to buy the gaskets from? Is their another supplier? In the future, I would certainly look a little harder at other manufacturers of exhaust manifolds.

Dude I guess we got what we paid for...next time I'll drop a few more bucks and get a better piece.

Dyno- -no truer words spoken. It is not my intent to bad mouth EMI . I assume they carry a excellent line of products but exhaust system is another story. Their warranty states some of the exh. systems are covered for 5 yrs. Which is great until you read the conditions.You must have the original receipt and sent in a warranty card. What warranty card? It may of got thrown away with the packing or EMI didn't ship one. Who's to know? Will keep you all updated with the results.

Get some gasket material and make your own, if you need. Just make sure the material you get will be resistant to the heat from the mainifolds and not harden/crack.

I have not had issues with any weld cracks or any defects at all in my manifolds. I proter and polished then, run a 741 Crane cam and have no reversion...

This is a notorious problem with these. That's why EMI doesn't sell them anymore like this. I know many people who this happened to (outside of this board), including myself.

You are on the right track, weld them shut - that's what I had done to mine. No leaks now :D .
