Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
I just bought a mirage 25p rh from a place out of florida off the net, it's a nice prop for a fair price. Well i put it on the drive today ('90 bravo one) and it doesn't slide all the way on. The back of it is different than my 23p mirage. It's like the thrust washer is wrong for the new prop. The hubs are a little different on the props. Here are the part numbers of the props: 48-13248-25 (which does not slide all the way on).
48-13704-23, fits fine with current thrust washer. Did i buy an incompatible prop, or do i just need to go buy a different five dollar thrust washer, i have tomorrow to send the prop back if it won't work, so hopefully i get some answers. thanks |
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
make sure you have the thrust washer on the right way witht he wide side of the beveled hole facing in. also the new flow-torque hubs have to be torqued down once to seat the hub in the prop, trying tightening it to spec 55FTLBS I think, and then see how it looks.
|
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
tightening it isn't the problem, the thick washer that goes on top of the prop before the nut is supposed to be on a little bit of spline yet, it isn't even close, anyone else have the answer?? i think the key is the difference between partnumbers........

Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
does the prop use a plastic hub and then a brass insert that goes around the prop shaft and into the hub?
|
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
Can you post a picture of the thrust washer being used? And the rest for that matter?
|
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
no, don't have a digital camera.......
|
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
If I understand it, you are saying that the flat spline washer under the hut no longer fits right? That spline washer does not get used with the new plastic hub design just the brass insert than a tab washer and the nut. like fountian siad a picture would help alot.

Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
The correct part number for your thrust washer should be 12-835467-5. See if your washer is the same. If not you need to get the correct one. Also those older Mirage props had a solid hub. The nut that catches the splines at the top of it wont work for you. If you have an older style Bravo 1 prop you will need the hub that slides in from the back with the long insert, hub part number 850821-1 with the insert 826074. If you have the newer style Bravo 1 with the torque flow hub all you will need is the the thrust washer part number 12-835467-5 and the insert part number 826074. Of course with both you will need the metal ring and the locknut. I'll post you a couple of pictures as soon as I figure out how to resive them on this new computer.

heres a picture of the parts, as I said if you have the newer torque flow hub than you dont need the hub just the insert and thrust washer.

Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
the big piece in the middle is for high HP apps and are usually only used with B1 props with your mirage you should have a cone shaped plastic insert that goes in the prop.

Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
i can't view pics, cuz i'm cheap and haven't paid yet, otheriwse, here is some more info for you. Both props are a mirage, neither are a mirage plus. Both are solid hubs, no plastic. the bigger brass washer that is tappered for the shaft is p/n 13171. the smaller splined brass washer is p/n 12-31211. these parts fit each end of the prop, they do not on the 25p

My bad, I thought he bought a Bravo 1 prop, I missed the fact that he bought a Mirage. More than likely his old one was a solid hub and the new one has a torque flow hub just like the Bravos.........If thats the case his nut that goes into the end wont work for him anymore. The smaller one is the 12-31211, the larger is the 826074. I would try the 826074 insert and the thrust washer part number 12-835467-5. Does you new "solid" hub have splines for the prop shaft or four grooves for the insert?
|
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
you bought some old stock, they dont make anyhting with solid hubs anymore its all inserts, some are solid and some are plastic cone but they are all inserts and i dont think they even make the old Mirage anymore at all.

Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
it's not new, it is a used prop. it was a spare for a guy with a cigarette boat. But anyways, the spline is correct, just seems like i need some different type of washers on each side or something. I'm not sure

Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
I got a real stupis question, there isn't an old thrust washer stuck to the bottom of the prop is there?

Thats a resonable question. I've done stupider sh!t..... |
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
nope, nothing but the prop's hubs, the two differ, not same other than the spline is correct

Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
we all have, when i worked as a marine tech in california I saw a few boats that had multiple thrust washers on them and owners wondering why they wouldnt fit, the one i was famous for was coupling bravos with no drive shaft coupler in them, and I liked to install wheel seals on trailers without putting the bearing in first.

Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
I don't know what else could be going on there I think all the old press in hub props were the same dimensionlly but i could be wrong, try getting julie or matt at throttle up to talk to you in the morning their # is posted in some of the posts in the prop section of this forum

Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
Maybe he's already got the hub and the insert in the prop. If so all you need is the nut and retaining ring. you really need a camera so we can look over the situation......... Somebody on here will recognize whats going on and be able to help you. Maybe you can borrow one somewhere and post a picture.

Is this a older Mirage solid hub 25? Like from the early 90's? If so, it probably has a part # on the prop like 48-13248A50 25P
If that is the case the thrust hub you are looking for is a Mercury part # 14359 Been there done that. I have thrust washer and the same prop for sale if you need a spare :D see attached pic. |
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
looks like big jim might be right, it's the same p/n prop that i bought. do i need to get two different washers, front and back, or just the big thrust washer??
|
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
Measure the hub housing from the outside diameter. This is an old part number, 48-13248-25. I believe what you have is an old style solid hub mirage. If so the thrust washer is indeed different and 1BIGJIM would be correct.

Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
Your prop does require the
#14359 Thrust Hub If you need help getting one we have them. Brett Anderson / BBLADES Professional Propellers 920-295-4435 |
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
i picked up that new thrust washer at a local mercury dealer, but do i use the same thrust washer on the nut side. Looks like this one is stepped to fit into the 23p, and it would just butt up against the 25p??? thanks for the help guys
|
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
On the back/nut side use the castellated splined washer, a tab washer and the nut torqued to 55 ft/lbs.

Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
some time the small old style thrust washer will fret onto the prop shaft tight enough that it apeears to be a part of it.
The prop shaft should not appear to have any shoulder on it if it does it is the old thrust washer and needs to come off. |
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
Wipe the grease off the shaft and take a close look at the spline. Check to see if it has a slight twist in it. I had the same problem when I went from a B1 to a Hydro Q4. I couldn't get it to go on that last little bit.
I replaced the shafts and then everything fit fine. My wallet fit in my pants better too because it had less in it. |
Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
wo wo wo, the question has already been answered, nothing to do with twisted shafts or me being a dink and leaving an old washer on. thanks for the help guys, i just need to have the right washer to go with the different prop. Thanks again, i'm anxious to see what this prop will do for me, next maybe i will have bblades lab it since they are in my neighborhood. What will labbing do for me, and if i hit a rock or something after having it labbed, is the prop toast??? Lake Mendota and Lake Menona have shallow channels.......

Re: Help!! might have bought the wrong prop!!
Lab Finished props can be brought back to their original configuration even after damage. Call us after your testing and we'll discuss your options.
