Steering Ram Question

I'm installing a single steering ram on a Single engine. Does it matter if the ram connects to the port vs starboard side of the drive. Does the prop torque play into this or being hydraulic, doesn't matter?

Re: Steering Ram Question

With my new full hydraulic single ram XS system, they say to mount it on the starboard side of the drive...

Mines mounted on the stab. side. Don't know is it matters.

Re: Steering Ram Question

For add-on or full hydraulic single ram, starbord mounting will mean shorter lines and in the case of add-on you won't have to carry lines over the gimbal housing. I can't think of any other reason as the ram is dual action and shouldn't care which side it is on.

Re: Steering Ram Question

The rotaion of the drive will also come into play.On my left hand rotation Cigarette 20 the cylinder is mounted on the port side. The reason is because the cap end of the cylinder produces more force that the rod end .The surface area of the piston is smaller on the rod end of the cylinder then on the cap end.
