Composite Distributor Gear
 

Are they better then the bronze, cast, ect?

The reason I am asking is when we Dynoed my engine last week the oil pressure was a little high (88lbs@5500 oil temp 180). As far as I know the only problem with high oil pressure is, it's a little hard on the distributor gear and might rob a few ponies.

So I was wondering what would be the best distributor gear to use?

i think i heard something about a composit gear from comp cams .I dont see much need in it if the dist height is good and they mesh together ok.

Anybody elso got anything on this????

Cmoney- It looks like you boat up North (Lake St Clair??). What viscosity oil are you running? Straight or Multi-viscosity? What weights? Rob's right regardless of which distributor gear material you use, If you decked the block,heads,intake,etc.,you'll have to watch the distributor height and shim it if necessary. The ol' rule of thumb for BBC engines is 10#/1000rpm's so you are definitely high on oil pressure. You running tight bearing clearances? I know nothing about composite distributor gears but I did mess up a couple General Kinetics cams with bronze distributor gears and straight 50w in the road racing world in a prior life. Ruined the cam gears and distributor gears. Had to have had big time 'spark scatter' too. Don't know what kind of oil bypass pressure springs your running. You can run unfiltered oil for a while after startup with the heavy straight weights. Don't think I answered your basic question but perhaps gave ya a few things to think about...

The engines are not in the boat yet, just been dynoed. The oil is Merc 25w-40. My builder doesn't think it's going to be a problem, but I am a little concerned. He said he checked the distributor gears and they meshed perfectly. The bearing clearances are a bit on the tight side but well within spec. By the way it is a dart Big M block.

Sounds like you're going to be OK. Again, I don't know when to use/not use composite gears. I need at least 5000rpm to get on plane so I idle until my oil temp is 180 or better. All I know is what has worked for me. I'm running Mobil 1 15-50w synthetic for what it's worth. Enjoy..
